Pups Broke Its Leg

Recommended Posts

Merry f in christmas. My pup broke its leg on sunday. No idea how, let him out in the garden 2 seconds later was yelping and wouldnt put weight on one of his back legs. £800 pound later and hes on complete rest for the forseeable future.

Hes 41/2 months and has fractured the tibia (I think) below his knee. Tendon that goes from the knee pulled a piece of unfused bone right up on itself.

Question??? How much does a break as a pup affect an adult working dog. Anyone been through the same?

Just Trying to keep him as quiet as possible so he doesnt undo the surgery.

My old dog Tigger broke his rear hok at the start of his third season not on especially rough ground it was in a grass field he had run many times before or was a hard run got the job done but at the end of the night I could see he was in a bit distress in the morning and a lot of swelling so he was x rayed by my vet and he said it was boken in 2 places and alot of small pieces of bone were floating about and he advised me to a friend of his at East Neuk in Fife who is regarded as one of the best orthopaedic surgeons in the country after the consultation he had also sent the x rays to that Noel Fitzpatrick that Irish vet on the telly ,...they had graded the break in 1 -5 as over 4 ,5 being worse case senario and until he opened up dint know what he could do with all the small fractures of bone floating about but they were both in agreement that the dog may never walk again never mind run .

He said it was a common injury amongst grey hounds and usually there pts .I said the dog gives me 100% everytime so do what you can and at least give the dog a chance .

The vet could see how much I wanted this dog fixed so took it as a bit of a challenge ....he was operated on with 3 pins holding the break together and in a cast for 6 weeks then it was a few months leed walking ...once I thought he was ready he had a month slowly and gradually getting him fitter and fitter until I was sure he was fully recovered then it was make or break ...his first slip was by accident on some rough plough and my heart was in my mouth I was thinking the worst and waiting for him to pull up but he got the job done and the main thing for me was he was ok and went on to continue his working carreer and is now an old dog without problems in that leg .

Like Max says time and patience is the main thing and the dog has youth on its side... another bit of advice I would give you is take the dog to the very best vet you can afford

.GOOD LUCK

  1. No Max not so far but the vet did say it will cause him problems as he gets older maybe even arthritis ...I thought he wasnt turning as tight as he used to after it happened but I was probably just imagining it ....but I think the main factor with this injury is time and plenty of rest to let it heal 100%

my old dog broke his leg in his fourth season... needless to say but hes still here with me to the day, he does a good job guarding my home and kennel... the only hunting I can do with him is light ferreting such as 3 or 4 hole warrens that are always netted up well, this will allow him to still get his mouth round some live game... such a shame as he was taking all quarry day and night... hope everything works out for you

Thanks for all the replies. Its good to hear most your dogs recovered from breaks. Rest rest rest. Hes not allowed to be a pup which is pretty hard when they are nutters.

Im staying positive and hoping he recovers well. 6 weeks to wait for his next xray. Vet doesnt know if the pins will come out. If it doesnt heal enough might have to leave them in which may cause problems as he grows. Hopefully will be able to take them out. Still have no idea how he did it. Free insurance ran out 4days before and didnt get round to sorting it out so have to pay out my pocket. Specialist quoted £1700 for the op. Vets charged £750. Wish I could have afforded the specialist.
