hello all, a tale of cost and worry

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

i've only posted a few times on here in the past and just recently not at all due to the following....

Been off work etc for 3 months due to a very bad kidney infection (motorcycle crash) but that was nothing compared to my lurcher.....

About 2 months ago i went for a mooch with my terrier Gina and lurcher Bandit and also my two lads.

Bandit spots mr long ears and off he goes, bunny makes a sharp exit into brush with Bandit in hot pursuit

my youngest races in after .... we hear a crash and a yelp... i fear the worst and follow....

youngest is helping Bandit out of a wide water filled ditch covered in brush and small trees, dog has a severe

limp on his right front leg.

i check him over can't feel anything broken or torn and no external tears or blood etc

p***ed off i start a very slow walk home carrying the dog (bloody painfull with aching kidneys).

Once home he starts to go down very quickly, lethargic won't get up or move looks "drugged up" wobbly etc

ok thinks me off to the vets ..... vet takes a look and says "probably just a strain and shock" meanwhile the dog is all over the place and looks like he's been at my home made scrumpy ! :drink: anyway vet gives him a jab

for the pain and takes my money.

Next day no change and i'm started to get really worried so i take him to another vet that my wife recommended

(deals with her horses) as soon as walk in with the dog the vet says "get that collar off and he needs an x-ray on his neck" x-ray reveals he has broken his neck at the first vertabrae and squashed two disks right behind his skull

vet says he has never seen anything like it and that the dog should be paralysed could operate but, 80 % chance of things going t*ts up due it being so close to base of skull hmmmmm

vet advises orthapedic collar / plaster and pain killers, muscle relax jabs into neck so as to allow the bones to fuse together as he is still a young dog.

well after 8 weeks of us giving him jabs  and keeping him quiet :wallbash: the neck was nearly healed all he had to have was an op to remove a cyst that had formed around the "impact" site and drain the wound. that done the vet then wanted to see him run (not fast but, tell that to a lurcher ) and pronounced him fit for duty again .

we went out yesterday after getting him a bit fitter with the vet and he nailed his first long ear of the season chuffed to f**k :toast: vet was most impressed and revealed that he has a soft spot for lurchers ferreting etc so bonus on top

both myself and the vet thought that he would have trouble picking up due to the now restricted neck but no probs

sorry if it was a bit long winded but, i had to post as i am well happy :laugh:

thanks for the replys

well i took the x-rays to the first vet and all i got was excuses and bulls**t needles to say i won't going there again.

As for the new vet well, he is an absolute star and hasn't got pound signs in his eyes (very rare) i've promised to take him out a couple of times when i go ferreting

myself i will take a while to recover that will learn me for mucking about with big toys  missus says i should grow up :whistling::icon_redface:

cheers

That's a cracking story, Anton! Real heart warmer

But now we have a dillemma. Vets like that one who saved ye Dog are like hens teeth. People should know where to find him. BUT; Slap it up here and the Anti's will have him too .....

May I suggest ye mention what County this guy might be found in? Then, maybe, anyone with an interest could approach ye privately and ye could take it from there? Something like that?

Sounds like the guy deserves 'our' patronship ~ and working animals certainly deserve that sort of care, when available :good:
