Amature Boxing ?

Recommended Posts

My old Judo and Thai boxing coaches both used to say the same thing.....

"you can train a man to fight but you can't make him a fighter"

Seen a few lads who thought they could handle it crumble and more than a couple who you would think nothing of, go in that ring/on that mat and fight like tigers ;)

Some great opinons, thanks all.

I think my lad tryed to choose boxing, but i am begining to belive gnasher, that boxing should choose him, as after having a good chat with him this evening, he wants out..

Didnt think it sounded right a lad should be looking forward to fighting not fearing it......sounds like you have a good relationship and he obviously knows he can tell you things so being a fit strong young boy its just a case of trying out different sports until he finds one that fits.....best of luck

thanks nasher. I have allways said to him, if he ever wanted out, dont be afraid and tell me. Its what he wants to do, not me. Shame as he seemed good, just not for him.

I would really suggest judo if he decides to change ;) it may seem a little iffy at first but believe me when he's able to pick up European championship medals and even possibly Olympic medals it will seem a world different ;)

Pm me if this is an interest no matter the area I may be able to help ;)

Thanks mushroom. ill have a chat with him and see what he thinks. Rang the trainer this evening and mentioned about my lad giving up and he said he could see it coming, he also thought it was a shame, but said its a very tough sport! He said he has a lad thair that is allways asking when is his next fight and spar, its that attitude that he looks for.

The first thing most trainers will look for in a young prospect is their mental ability not physical........a trainer will be subtly looking at a kids personality and any halfway decent trainer will be able to tell if a kid doesnt have the insides for it.

Mental strength is what you walk IN the gym with, physical strength is what you walk OUT the gym with ;)

 ..

His very fit right now, never seen him so fit! He can jog for 4 to 5 mile no bother and not a breath out of him.

His going to keep the fitness training up anyhow, better then sat in front of a xbox like a lot of lads his age i suppose.

See how things pan out.

Good on him for giving it a try , all fight sports are tough but I agree you sort of get chosen by boxing .

I went looking for a way to fight back and not knowing how , first time I stepped through them ropes I was hooked .

Loved everysecond of it but never quite made the grade .i wanted to go pro can still remember the trainer shaking his head and saying there's a vast gap between a boxer and a fighter and unfortunatly i was the former lol

Saluki he's only young , your doing the right thing by letting him make his own decision about it

you can't force the fight in someone if they don't enjoy it ;)

That's just reminded me though of my mum she hated me boxing , still didn't stop her getting me up at 6 shouting " ain't you supposed to be doing roadwork " lol

Good support is always a bonus :D
