Matt 160
It might help if you tell everyone what area you are in?Bedale/leyburn as stated in title? TC LOL I'd just come from another section of the forum where stupidity seems to be in vogue.... That's my excuse anyway Apologies to the OP, my advice would be to check with your local authority first; most of them offer free or at least subsidised pest control. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
just get a block of rat poison and paste a bit nuttella on it should do the job Don't do that; it's illegal to add 'attractants' to baits and also quite dangerous Quote Link to post
bell 3,601
No its not a squirel, its a rat. its in the roof void under the kingspan and in the dry lined walls. i cant see where its getting in and dont have time to feck about looking which is why i want someone who knows what theyre doing/looking for............................please Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Check the drains. Drainage faults are the number one cause of this type of thing.... Quote Link to post
ftm 3,357
how come its dangerous? its gonna be in loft -if it were in my loft i wud do owt to get rid of it mate Quote Link to post
Matt 160
how come its dangerous? its gonna be in loft -if it were in my loft i wud do owt to get rid of it mate Why is it dangerous? Well, rats are known as 'hoarders and gorgers', in other words, they like moving excess food around and a bait block that starts out in one place can often end up somewhere completely different If you add an 'attractant', you make it more attractive to other animals, including humans, and it counteracts the bitrex repellent which is pretty much widespread in modern baits. That is why it's illegal to do it. There's an old saying about a little bit of knowledge being dangerous. This, I think is a classic example. Let me just explain a little further: Modern rodenticide baits work on the 'cumulative' basis, whereby a lethal dose of toxin gradually builds up in it's system and after a few days it haemorrhages and dies. Sub lethal doses (one bait block for example) create 'tolerance' to the active ingredients, and serious long term problems. So your 'jobbing' expert rat baiter turns up with his DIY bait blocks and jar of nutella. Let's just presume for a minute that he's got the sense to use more than one block, so he liberally chucks a few nutella'd blocks around the roofspace. Mr rat ignores them for a few days ("ooh, something new, that's a bit scary..."), then he scoffs one and likes it. Mr Rat then finds the others and carries them off to a nice quiet spot to be eaten later... Let's just gloss over the danger of those blocks being moved to the airing cupboard where a kiddie may find them, and presume Mr Rat has taken a lethal dose..... After a few days, he feels sleepy, and finds a nice warm, safe bit of fibreglass in the far reaches of the roofspace and curls up for one final long sleep.... A week after the passing of Mr Rat, there is a sickly, sweet smell permeating every bit of the house, and no air freshener seems to have an effect... By now, with Mr Rat dead and thereby unable to defend his territory, another rat (we'll call it Mrs Rat) goes for a wander along the soil pipe and finds that dodgy bit of slate that was used instead of the proper bend and feels a nice warm airflow from the wall cavity of the house... she makes her way up through the cavity, and not only finds a nice warm home, but a little pile of blue blocks coated in nutella spread.. And the whole cycle starts again. Believe me, and can, and does happen: Quote Link to post

Matt 160
Yes yes yes.........lovely story but who is going to shift my f'ing rat ! Have you tried your local authority yet? Not only are they often the cheapest option, but they are often equipped with drain cameras which your average pestie can't afford. Quote Link to post
bell 3,601
Yes mate, just made the call now. £60 but unlikely to get to me for 3 days as they are overun on rat jobs. Caught a load in fens round the chicken pen last couple of weeks but trying deal with them in the house is another matter especially when i cant see where the're getting in. Quote Link to post
budgie123 163
just google pest control leyburn/bedale and you will find a local pest controller. or go on bpca website they have a list of members for all areas. I do rabbitting around leyburn and have seen a number of pest control vans over the last couple of years. If you are seeing rats in the garden look around you property for defects which will allow them in. be aware they climb like a squirrel so look at shrubbery and things to gutter level.
