Brief Encounter In Fox City!

Recommended Posts

Nothing would surprise me where fox is concerned a few lads on here need to get out more and away from the keyboard a few months of hunting plenty of foxes in plenty of different places would open your eyes, any body who has hunted for a while has experiences he can't share for fear of being called a liar.

Any chance that the spot is a release area for inj/ orphaned foxes? Only saying as someone keeps releasing foxes on our shoot, easy to tell em as they havent same instinct as wild fox and u can get much closer

It's obvious to me, their behaviour that is, as I know the location & circumstances......can't say much more than that mate & mooching barely exists here ;-) I was more interested in how the bitch worked tbh.....

Few year back my mate rang me from work asking if i would go down to his house as his wife had herself and the kids locked in and was going histerical as a fox was outside trying to take her lab pup.I thought he was taking the piss but went down anyway and took 1 of the lurchers with me.When i got there she,[the mates wife]was peeping out the door and looked terrified.I asked where she last seen the fox and she said in the hedge that surrounds the veg garden. The had a very large patch of rubbarb and it looked like a good spot for foxy to hide.I lashed a rock into it and had the lurcher on a slip and sure enough a fox tipped out went about 20yds and turned and sat looking at me and the dog.I slipped the dog and the fox did not move until the dog was almost on top of him[too late]and dog put an end to it.I was saying it to another chap a couple of days later and he told me that the neighbour down the road from my mate had taken in a fox which had been hit by a car and was feeding and looking after it for the past couple of months,he also told me it was as good as tame and was used to dogs as the guy had a couple of dogs himself,at least he wont have to feed it anymore, lol.

We've shot stupid foxes on the lamp before and i mean really stupid that were definitely released by some do good body .The back feet had been snipped in the web on all 19 we shot in a week .I've walked to within feet of a sleeping fox but have to admit charlie is usually up and off first sign of disturbance ,especially ify dogs involved .Saying that I called a fox one evening in day light and slipped a young lurcher .Dog ran to meet it and gods honest they sniffed noses before I geed her a bit and off they went in a play style run around the field ,bitch went on to make a decent foxer though not first class .Where there is no disturbance I guess charlie gets complacent .

Too true Downsview, they're an amazing animal and the more you meet them the more fascinating they become, same as most of our quarry species.

Regarding foxes being half asleep ?

I've seen terriers nail them while curled up twice. Both times the fox was on the back of a bank curled up in the sun.

I also know a lad who was walking along a racehorse gallops and came on a fox in the sand asleep. He had a gun with him and went to shoot the fox from a couple of yards away, and missed !!!!!!!

Also regarding foxes walking out of an earth after being bolted. You'll be amazed how often this happens if you're quiet and the fox thinks the terrier is the only present danger.

Only yesterday I seen a vixen sit down and watch hounds approach her.
