Brief Encounter In Fox City!

Recommended Posts

In the summer I was very kindly gifted an 8 month old red fell bitch, the first terrier I've owned in a little over 15 years & her intended use was a digging dog only.....

Now she is around 15 months old & has been present only on a few digs, but she hasn't even seen a carcass, as all quarry had been released on these digs, although she has been to ground a couple of times.... She hasn't been the most confident of dogs, but this has obviously grown with each successive month I've had her.....

This morning I'd just planned to go for a mooch, intending to check an earth I'd found in some forestry not long after I'd arrived over here, I'd actually stumbled across a fox sleeping outside this earth & after watching it for a while, it sensed my presence & wondered off. Two years later I now live near this spot, but hadn't returned since, until this morning.....

Although I took the gear with me, I left it in the car across the road, as I assumed this would be more of a walk than anything else.....I found the earth easily & allowed the bitch to have a sniff round, she showed a little interest, but no real mark.....there was low lying bramble near by with well used runs running through it, I picked the bitch up & walked through some of it, no sooner had I done this, I noticed a fox curled up asleep less than 2 meters from me in the bramble! This was quite close to a very busy road & with no collar on the bitch I wasn't going to loose her, but I dropped her to the floor still on the lead....now only a foot or so away from the fox, which stirred & simply stood up & looked at us! I gave her some slack, she lunged forward & made contact, a little scuffle & a dog fox was off, disappearing quickly.....

Obviously I went back to the earth & this time she was giving a definite mark at one of the holes, tale slowly wagging, refusing to move.....

The car was five minutes walk away, at this point I suffered a mental block & just made my way back for all the gear, without securing the four holes visible! On getting excitedly to the car I realised my error! When I returned, sure enough, I saw a fox slinking off into the trees very close to the earth.....I tried it, although she was very keen & travelled through it a couple of times, it seemed I'd f****d up! Lol

So I continued my walk, within ten minutes I'd found a really nice earth at the bottom of a large scotch pine, one hole had been freshly dug out & there looked to be maybe half a dozen more holes to the earth, although the bitch gave a strong mark, I was distracted by a hollow near by, with more bramble around it..... I decide to investigated this before I did anything else...I walked the 50 yards over to the hollow & sure enough another two hole earth was in the bank, I picked the bitch up & walked through the bramble surrounding the hollow, another dog fox appeared!! Casually looked at us & wondered off.....I took another step & a vixen stood up!......again within a couple of metres of us, she also just trotted off, but both in the opposite direction to the earth I'd just found....

I made my way back to the earth & as approached I saw yet another fox running off through the trees beyond it, the bitch had seen all these foxes at this point & as you can imagine was pretty wound up, as was I...lol

I decided if it held I would just go for a bolt...as a confidence boost for the bitch.....I loosed her & she shot in, a minute or so past with no sound & then a fox bolted, closely followed by 'jury' nose to brush! She was all over it, the fox doubled back & returned to the hole it bolted from with 'jury' close behind.....I then could hear the familiar sounds of a terrier engaging it's quarry.

All thoughts of a 'bolt' left my mind, as I thought 'we're f***ing having this.....' Up to this point still no bay or yap, as I hastily tried to secure the earth, I'd left my shovel in the hole they had returned to......as I looked up I could see this moving, I expected to find the fox backing out, but no, it was 'jury' still stuck fast to her fox, attempting to draw or being pushed out?...half her body was out & they separated, with the fox lunging out from the mouth of the hole & the bitch narrowly dodging the counter attack.....what surprised me now, was the fox standing it's ground just inside the entrance.....now 'jury' bayed!...slowly working her way back in, she bayed with a kind of uncertainty.....she once again disappeared from sight & fell silent, moments later a dog fox bolted....it was over...

She didn't realise it had gone & continued to work around the earth for several minutes until satisfied it was no longer there....which pleased me, I leaded her up & checked her over...not even a scratch......not bad for a first attempt :-)

Walking back to the car I was buzzing, although still thinking about my amateur performance....& I reflected on the foxes I'd seen in a small area in a short space of time....& I thought 'hmmm....maybe I need a bullx' lol

Lol it would be strange thing to make up! Buts that's exactly how it happened :-) I expected that reaction, but hey, who cares.....I could of left all that out & just explained the bolt...

so the terrier caught a fox on the lead? that must of been an extendable lead haha

I saw a dvd with a mush and his lurchers,he called fox,s in and the dogs literally knacked some of them from the length of their leash,im sure many on here have seen the same dvd,s.

Seems a strange one but also a bit of strange story to make up funnily enough I had wander before work with the dogs and few weeks back just a Quiet one at the local woods for an hour on my way back to the car the dogs flushed a fox, which isn't unusual at this spot, I don't have a running dog so he usually slips the dogs after some mayhem and they return tongues hanging out after a short while. However after A few mins of yapping one dog returns as usual after a few whistles. But no sign of pup I call a few times all is quiet and I decide to head back up the main path towards the last yaps I heard. After a few more mins the pup pops out about 100 yards further on I call her but she doesn't respond just stood rigid facing the other way, her recall is decent without being fully nailed as she is 8 month and keen as. I am at this point getting a bit peed off as to why she is ignoring me and is still stood rigid in the same spot. I notice at this point a brown thing in the middle of the path, at first I just thought it was a log or something but as I got closer it look less log more animal. I got to about 40 yards away and it finally made a move and was a black/ brown fox not caked up in mud or anything genuine black brown fur Strangely it had stood within a couple of yards of the pup just watching each other like they were in a trance or sometihing, as soon as it saw me and moved so did the pup in hot pursuit. Never seen anything like this before and probably wouldn't have relied it if I hadn't hae been their atb
