stevie67 42
ive had a good season so far so i thought id write about this hunt. i was driving to the next villiage last week when i spotted a sika stag grasing away 400 yrds up a hill, these deer are only 5 mins away from my home but we only take a couple a year to try to build the numbers up which they are, but there starting to get shot heavy again by other hunters so i decided to go for a stalk. i rang a mate whose never had a sika and he said hed be there in a hour. it was round 3.45 pm when we got up there and i dropped him off, i was just pulling away to stalk further around the hill when he waved me back, he had just heard a stag squeal and decided to head for that instead of down the hill where i had seen the stag earlier.i drove off to hunt further down and when i got there another man i know was just heading in there so i went back to where ide dropped my mate and struck off down hill where he was originally heading, i got down to the bottom field and was about to turn back as the light was starting to fade quick when i spotted a black shape 200 yrds down from me. i scoped it and saw it was a stag walking down away from me, i lost sight of him and there was no easy way down to him so i took my chances and just started stalking. after a few minutes i spotted him again grasing on a peice of level ground around 130 yrds down and he was facing me, i set up the sticks and got on him, he was looking right up at me and was ready to go. i got a touch of buck fever so lowered the scope to where the neck opened out and fired. he dropped on the spot and deer broke everywhere but i hadnt seen any of them because the way the hill was. the shot broke the spine in the base of the neck and continued down through the vitals. i recovered the bullet about to exit just in front of the liver. i dragged him down to the bottom of the hill and rang the farmer who picked me up and took me back up to my van where i met my mate who had just shot his first sika hind so all in all a worthwhile stalk for both. skinned head yesterday so few pics of it as others arent great. 5 Quote Link to post
