James ed 58
Hello pal and welcom. I use straw or shredded paper in the sleeping area, and sawdust in the rest of the pen for mine, some people use clothing just about any thing that will keep them warm dry and clean mate, hope that helps Quote Link to post
Nick3439 83
Straw in winter; old tshirts in summer Quote Link to post
Rowan 308
Yep , i'm the same hay in the sleeping area, snowflake dust extracted shavings in the rest. Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
I only use wood shavings for bedding, paper shredding is crap, the ferrets get printing ink on their fur, and there's only one way for the ferrets to get it off, and that's lick it off, plus it makes your ferrets look unkept and matty coated from the ink. 2 Quote Link to post
James ed 58
Iv never had that problem with any of mine, and not to pull my own chain but mine look in tip top condition, 1 Quote Link to post
vanman1 411
Summer 3-4 inch of wood shavings,Winter 2 inch of wood shavings and an old hoody sweatshirt,if its really cold they get hay as well. Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,215
Hay or straw year round,,,,,can't see how shavings would be any good for bedding,,,don't they just sleep on top of it? Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Hay or straw year round,,,,,can't see how shavings would be any good for bedding,,,don't they just sleep on top of it? Mine just scrape a bowl in the shavings and get their heads down, as another joins in the bowl gets bigger, I've tried shredded paper, but I'm not a big fan, no good when your ferrets get back wet or get a sweat on, then get laid down in printed paper. I tried straw and hay stacks (pun) of times, but they just flatten it and lay on top. So now I stick with shavings, good clean shavings all the way. I bought a hob two years ago, it's bedding was all shredded news paper, it took a full Summer to grow the ink out of it's fur, the lad that sold me the hob didn't believe it was the same animal when he saw it after it's moult. But each to their own I suppose. Quote Link to post
James ed 58
Or no I don't use newspaper, it's office paper shredders mate so there isn't a grate deal of ink on it, I no what you mean about them getting home wet I usually give them a quick dry with a towel then feed an bed them down 1 Quote Link to post
rizla1 122
I just buy the blocks of hay from home bargains £1 a block, I never use straw as fles and ticks can live inside the tubes Quote Link to post

Nope as has been said, my lots crape a bowl in it and pile in You have to be so careful with the heat with ferrets in summer and for me it works a treat, but i suppose it will depend on how good your hutch construction is and how many ferrets in the nest/sleep area.Never use straw as it can harbor mites bugs etc . bart308 11
Shavings all year round for mine too. cleaner than the others I think especsially when they drag food etc back in. Far more absorbant when ferrets are wet too than the alteratives( though a couple of inches of shavings in the box dries the off before we get home any whay). Nick3439 83
They make a little nest in the straw/clothes don't think they would be comfy with just sawdust, I use that in the rest of the place though. Quote Link to post
