There was a chap selling custom made hare gate nets out of spun poly. I know Hareydave had some of him that he was very pleased with, send him a pm he is always willing to help. smithie 2,443
i have used 4 inch mesh maybe 4.5 and caught but its far from ideal. i would want a man left on the net for sure and if possible might rig the net so when a hare hits it all the net gather to the hare. but you can not beat having the correct tool for the job.. go on get your money out Quote Link to post
Mr Wilkes 2,980
Imo if youre using 4.2/5 mesh you need a good depth on that net as the hare will hit it at speed and wrap himself up as he goes.. i use 5" mesh which enables the hare to get his head through, he will keep pushing to get through the net and will tangle himself as he does..plus hes a lot easier to kill with his head through a 5" mesh. 1 Quote Link to post

young man 225
Do the hares stay alive? If a hare was netted and moved from a to b? would they live on or would the die from stress? Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
I never moved them as I kill the net off but I'm sure I read on here they die if not transported correctly. have a search through this section if you got the time Quote Link to post

krawnden 1,036
Years ago I helped out on a couple of days longnetting hares that were being caught to stock another estate. It was like a days' driven coursing, except the hares were driven into nets. Each hare was put into its own specially designed little carrying box. I assume they survived, though I never had anything to do with it other than beating on the day. Quote Link to post
jigsaw 11,863
yeah the hares need to be kept in boxes with very little room for them to turn or move once the journeys not too long, ive seen the coursing clubs have em in rows of shoe box sized containers, and i think as little contact with the human hand as possible if i can remember correctly.
