johnny 2 367
We all have our favoured "type" when it comes to lurchers and there's nothing wrong in that after all life would be boring if we all kept the same BUT within the makeup of our lurchers we have all matter of match ups to produce the end product ie:APBT, Beddy, Saluki, Collie, Wheaton, Whippet, Greyhound amongst them..now NONE of them are flawless and have traits that cause debate..a Bull x generally lacks pace,Beddy x's have a more than average % of yappers, Salukis with their "boring" boxing and half hearted running style, Whippets being shivering wrecks in anything other than Mediterranean heat lol, Greyhounds renowned for nothing other than raw speed on bowling green flat terrain..a Collie capable of stalking his quarry or heaven forbid choosing what "it" believes is a run worth taking...BUT why are all the other types of lurchers traits accepted as nothing other than the norm apart from a Collie x? Now I have no axe to grind with any cross as I have Collie, Saluki & Bull x's but just had me thinking as to why one dogs traits are classed as a job to the vets or passed on yet all the others are found acceptable?Youve far too much time on your hands 3 Quote Link to post

weasle 1,119
The guy downt pub said the best way to get a good colicky crosses are to find the best one you can then cross it with a bully or salukiki type, then you'll get a good one I know a similar wise lad,He reckons when a lad gets hes cur for the first 2 seasons you will here about all the great lamping its doing,By third season things are starting to get quite,You might even hear if someone else was out with him, that the dog wasn't running right and had to go home early. He reckons you wont hear any more lamping tales after that and the cur will suddenly age 2 or 3 years. Mind he also says if a lad cannot tell you hes dogs faults you cannot believe the dogs merits. Probably just the cider he be drinking? 3 Quote Link to post

FUJI 17,327
Youve far too much time on your hands Yep .. im joining yourself and the rest of the cyber hunters on here 24/7 buddy :-) haha...just wish id realised how good this form of hunting was before now ... being honest mate my dogs are far from perfect, I have owned stalkers, yappers, jackers and everything in between..types of dogs not what you would necessarily associate with those traits either so none are guaranteed to NOT have a flaw no matter what the breeding?..my buddy who keeps coursing bred Saluki types says often a day on the Fens with not just his dogs but associates too is worse than a pack of foxhounds on a hot scent when it comes to giving mouth lol..like I say I have no axe to grind with any type as I own just about the lot. .I use them to their strengths or atleast what I believe to be that..personally I don't give a f**k what anyone says or thinks about my dogs, they ain't world beaters and I know that myself but don't matter what work you throw at a lurcher trust me they ALL have a breaking point..we all like to push our dogs to the limits but there's a fine line between limit and over it..once you go beyond it this is quite often when lots of the said problems can occur imo..keep at em folks :-) 7 Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,376
honest post andy i think everyone has or will at some point own a stalker yapper jacker etc and is there such a thing has the perfect lurcher you can pick fault with any dog if you really wanted to its funny how so many hear about or see a certain cross exploits then rush out buy one without actually matching thinking what ground or quarry and how much graft they will get and what they will mostly meet and then they dont read the dog when its out or get over excited and over match the dog then the blame is with the dog without looking at themselves but has long a owner is happy with there lot and content with getting out then alls good 1 Quote Link to post
bracken boy 584
If we all agree thats collies have brains then really i cant see a problem in having collie blood in our lurchers as we are all hoping to have a hunter thats knows what to do for his owner in the field, properly trained should be a cracker of a cross. Probably just the cider he be drinking? Definitely agree about not recognising your own dogs faults/ merits. They all have them to some extent. Always baffles me why people seem to care so much about what another man run. People pigeon hole lurcher breeds on here as if every mix is going to be the exact same as every other dog of the same mix, not black and white like that in real life just a load of shades of grey. Take breed out of the equation and just use the most capable dogs for what their purpose is and imo the outcomes would be better 1 Quote Link to post
