sussex 5,777
Out this morning at first light me & the dog was about half a mile from the van when the heavens opened ..we ploughed on regardless ..3 hours later wet miserable we had seen only one fallow doe , & all we see of her was her backside gliding between the trees ..but that's stalking .This afternoon with the cloud breaking & just the odd glimmer of blue sky we were readying ourselves for another go at a different place ..As we got into the truck the phone rang , it was the farmer from one of my permissions (the chicken farm).there's loads of deer in the pond field and one of them looks like its got bailer twine wrapped around it head ..Ok i'm coming past your place i'll stop and have a look ..thinking there is little or no chance it will still be there given he had driven by on his quad , stopped & looked & then rung me before driving of .. On arrival I walked down the hill to the wood , going in to stalking mode I dropped down behind the dam of the pond , across the stream , just to wide to jump due to the constant rain , but just deep enough to flow nicely over the top of my highleg harkila boots filling them instantly ..up the other side so I could peer over the edge , the loads of deer had turned into seven , does, fawns & a couple of yearlings ..thinking its not a total waste i'll take a yearling , when from almost under the highseat to my left (where Rabid shot his first fallow of his auction trip) the buck walked out .. as he walked across the field I had him in the scope , no more than 80m I gave a loud cough , followed by the shot , he dropped on the spot .We watched for a few minutes , the dog had been virtually at my side , she had made no noise or movement to alert the deer & remained rock steady to the shot ..Which pleased me no end .. Walking over to check what the deer actually had round its head was electric fencing ..although it was also round its neck it was able to feed , but I would think only a matter of time before it got hooked up on something .. Gralloched & clean it went into the coldroom at 96lb ..destined for our local farm shop for a venison butchery course next week .. 2 Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
It's funny the sounds you find yourself making trying to either get something to stop or present a shot. Generally starts off subtle but can descend to loud, undignified... Oi! He's the perfect size for your butchery course... Bon-appetite and well done pooch. 1 Quote Link to post
