markieboi 0 Posted October 27, 2007 Report Share Posted October 27, 2007 some ferrets sometimes dont go down unless they can smell rabbit as mine i put on the top of the bury and she goes down the hole she smells most rabbits in and that way she bolts more maybe just my ferret Quote Link to post

wabbithunter_15 0 Posted October 27, 2007 Report Share Posted October 27, 2007 persistance pays off just keep trying him out in holes with rabbits in he'll soon learn to be running after the wabbits. make sure you get him some pipes to play about with in his court/hutch he'll think that the rabbit holes are just big play pipes and will run around them flushing out all your lovely dinner!! I've had good workers that wouldn't go down holes unless there were rabbits in residence. You could persist and force them down but nothing. It is frustrating after spending time setting nets, however you learn to trust them. The next set, they'd nose about, then give a shake and bush up their fur and tail, and you'd know it was game on. As your ferret is a newby, I just give her time and try everyone elses ideas too. I've got a young hob who's the opposite, he won't come out. He does the annoying duck back in when you try to get him, though I hope he comes good as he's off cracking stock, and though he's an albino I like the look of him. I generally prefer the poleys to look at. I once had a picture of a jill which I called Rosie. She was a tiny polecat, with a lovely temprement, yet she wouldn't work till the second year after being born. She was a cracker. To my undying shame, I loaned her to a friend who lost her, I tried to find him, but he went to a pub/nightclub, after his day out, and I never got him till the next day. Suffice to say we're no longer friends, I no longer lend ferrets, and I never got Rosie back. Quote Link to post

I'm so glad I did; If only to catch IanRob's Excellent and enjoyable contribution there! Great post, mate! All I'd really add, Steffan, is to Never try to force a ferret down a hole when the day comes that one of ye best little workers fluffs it tail up like a bristle brush and steadfastly and Actively refuses to have anything to do with that particular hole. Not exactly certain what might be down there. But that'd certainly be a better moment to box the ferret and fetch a handy terrier and a spade. I only mention this because it happened to me, at least the one time, when I was about your age. I didn't know what to make of it then. But I've since learned enough to strongly suspect there was a Mink down that smaller, single entrance looking hole! Quote Link to post

Give the young thing time, as others have suggested it may know there is nothing down there, definately put some tunnels and tubes in it hutch give it something to investigate, Ferrets are nosy buggers and naturally love to explore, If you have someone else local willing to go out with you that has a more experienced ferret that may also help. We nearly always take our young ones out with an adult the first few times to teach it the ropes. Happy ferreting! Quote Link to post
