midnight 657 Posted November 24, 2014 Report Share Posted November 24, 2014 No need to normalise first, you won't have caused any stress from forging or changing the shape . Chisels are o1 tool steel I think . Get a wood only fire going put them in it , build up the fire so it's good and hot , as it dies down make sure the steel is in the heart of the Fire and let it burn out with the steel in the ash . Next morning they will be annealed (softened) you will be able to cut and file them then , sand paper with a hard backing will cut the steel and let you Polish it . Get your shape , bevels etc .. You could normalise if you wanted to go to town but it's probably not worth it on early projects . Heat treating is different but doable with low tooling to ! 2 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
