Thinking Of Returning To Fac (Range Shooting)

Recommended Posts

I gave up rifle shooting in the 80's.

I would like to start up again, what I used to shoot was open sights 100 yards with a Mosin Nagent 762 x 54 if memory serves.

What cheap rounds are out there now for a open sight plinker, can you still pick up cheap ammo ?

Thank you for any advice.

why limit yourself to 100 yds if your going to the trouble of joining a club and getting a cabinet you might as well shoot long range .its far more involved and interesting and does not need to cost the earth.if your on a tight budget then i would say 22lr out to 100 should present a challenge .check out clubs like offas dyke they shoot mil surp alot.if budget is not tight a 308 or what ever you fancy in open class.if you need any advice bung me a pm.

well done for getting back into a great sport

I went the air rifle route. Lucky I have some land so made a sixty yard range and have a few good clubs nearby. I find the cost of ammo is way overpriced for hobby shooting. Horses for courses but you don't have to count the rounds.

If, big if, I had a choice it would be .303 and a SMLE, a "jungle". Thats a dream.

Thought of field archery? Another cheap way to shoot as well.

Whatever you decide on, good luck and enjoy it.

Thank you all, my nearest range Minsterley Ranges has two 50 metre and a hundred metre range.

I still have my cabinet and like the idea of 303 but thought ammo was hard to come by.

22lr would be great for a session but I would yearn for a centre fire blast.

Should be a bit of fun for you :)

A .223 should do you for the ranges you're looking at (and far beyond) without denting your pocket on the ammo front. For factory stuff PPU knock out some cheap rounds (Serbian I think) but they may not perform amazingly well in all guns - but plenty cheap enough to test and disregard if they don't do the business on the targets.
