beast 1,884
maximus, the voice of experience! jigsaw, get them to recall to a whistle, if you are hunting forestry. you might want to get a tracking collar too, else they may pull a deer and you wont see them for hours, until they have eaten the bugger!!! in more open areas i walk across the wind, and the dogs will hunt off along scent away upwind, so to the side of me. collie crosses make great hunters, but saluki crosses will too, many are just run off slip so dont get the opportunity to learn nose work, but yours will pick it up soon enough. love working the dogs loose myself, not knowing what they may get hold of, like to get them out hunting on moonlit nights too. beast they wouldnt go that far away from me tbh,and their recall is excellent,i use the kelpie x also and shes very determined at times but its on and off at the minute, shes never gone too far.the saluki x's are very obedient, the one dog i find with an excelleent nose at times is a dog from lucas, hes flushed a few big rabbits from large expanses of trees and scrub.its a good craic and a handy way of letting the dogs have a bit of fun too, i wasnt doubting their recall bud, just that a whistle carries further than a shout. and is more discreet!!! about the collar, its just that deer can sometimes take a dog a long way from you in forestry, and youve no way of knowing where. peace of mind! beast 1,884
using dogs to hunt up doesnt spoil them for the lamp in the slightest. mine will stay at heel when i tell them, or go hunt up at night if i tell them, or when i have the lamp they will come straight back after a run (whether they catch or not) without being called: i train them that turning the light out means "come back", not too difficult really, just needs a bit of pateince from you until the penny drops with the dog. in broken scrub and standing corn, where you can easily miss a squatting rabbit when you shine around, i let the dogs hunt up at night and simply light up the dogs at work. 3 Quote Link to post
collie/grey 238
I'd barely see any game if my dogs didn't hunt up, can't stand dogs that just tag along at your heel during the day. 1 Quote Link to post

coursing-lad 71
During the day I let the dogs beat about (in hope they flush something) works a treat. No matter where Iam I let them do their own thing. Still having control over them due to great recall. And lamping of course they'll be on slips Quote Link to post

shaaark 10,693
Carry lol it always was hunt jump kill carryeven if they couldn't they were always advertised hjkc text talk for selling lurchers lol Lol good way to describe/lie about a dog, but not as amusing as the modern terms lol. Kin el, if someone was to use all the modern terms to sell a dog, they'd be writing half a book, not adding a few letters! Lol Quote Link to post
