bullx100% 681
any one working taller dogs for bushing mooching. Most bushers I've seen or read about are terrier types or spaniel cross. Anyone using a proper bitza (bit of everything). I no that a taller dog isn't going be able work tite cover like brambles but something that you could use mooching ,woodlands ,open field ,hedgerows ,moorlands ,take ferretin, use picking up and flushing to gun,.......a general mooching dog really. bullx100% 681
No not nessaserily a lurcher just something a bit taller.was reading a post the other day about collies been used as bushers. Anyone still using coolies for bushing or collie crosses. Saw a member put a post on her a while ago and think he had a hound cross for bushing rabbit and fox. Said they would work close in Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
Used to bush with a border collie bitch.....she'd work all cover, just not the really tight stuff my little jack fits under. Got a springer x lurcher,,,,,not really a bushing dog by any standards but a good mooching dog. Quote Link to post

Tozer 385
it's been up several times, but this was my dog (brindle): The only way I can describe her is she just did. She would get through anything, as stubborn as a mule. 1 Quote Link to post

Tozer 385
I honestly couldn't tell you, I was 11 and wanted a terrier to go ratting. We responded to an advert for a JRT pup (no internet then), and was met with 2 bitches that at 8 weeks old stood as tall as the dam, their tails were docked, with the bone poking out and had mange. We said we would take both, but someone else had put a deposit down... bullsh*t . Took a shaky, nervous and ill pup home. Got it treated and turned out to be an epic dog, retrieved winged geese from water and did everything I could have asked, had a proud place in the house. The most loyal dog I have ever known. I loved that dog. 8 Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
Her dam was JRT, the rest is a best guess, came over in a horse box and in pup from Ireland. Quote Link to post

Shame about her bad start but obviously you done her proud and her you..from the pic she looks like a good size and at first I thought it had some Alsatian in it due to the ears ad strong muzzle (might just be pic) either way she sounds like a handy tool to have had around . 1 Quote Link to post

That wasn't how I was expecting it to look.lol..looks nice that..what she like over open ground. Does having that bit of lurcher in her keep her on the out side of cover a it whating the run more than the flush..? Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
She's quite quick, but not got the sharp turn of my other whippet lurcher. She covers more ground hunting than my other dogs and prefers to wait for the bolt just like a lurcher. I just mooch with her, fun little dog. She also stalks and try's to round up my other lurcher. Quite a flattering photo....given what she looks like in some of the others. Edited November 15, 2014 by wuyang 2 Quote Link to post
Bossie 90
Pretty thing Wuyang! Taller dogs, I use a Brittany 17-18"tts but have worked with a Heidewachtel 20" tts, German Wachtel 18-20"tts probably one of the best bushing dogs I've ever seen, like a springer on steroids. Heideterrier also becoming more and more popular due to boar pest control, mainly a very big Jagd-Airedale-Bull cross, hard hunting, vocal and courageous dogs. Size wise they range from 17/24" tts. Have seen Border Collies bush and ferret to a pretty good standard, obedience wise excellent standard. Just find them a bit nervous and sensitive. I prefer something a bit more bombproof. 1 Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Why gundog crosses are not more popular is a mystery to me. Thesedays Im all about the bigger dogs. Im hoping to continue from my German wirehair, and breed myself a good hunting pup that will work with its mother. She hunts hard and fast, can keep a wounded stag pinned, will hold a mark on a fox. Is keen on varied predators that we encounter here and abroad. She points birds well. She loves a boar hunt. Though the pup will be for big game not birds,. I like the speed of the hunt with the bigger dogs, I like their ability to hold big game in a more certain manner. And for now, I dont want or need pure scent hounds, as I only have medium tracts of land, but they are in the pipeline for the future. Good hunting 1 Quote Link to post
