Ticks On Ferret

Hi all,

Iv just found some ticks on my ferrets, iv been on the phone to the vet and getting some frontline spray in the morning but would just like to ask ,

 

Will the ticks fall off after I put the frontline on them as one of my ferret has one in his ear!

 

And not much room in there for a remover tool or any ideas of a good remover to use in such a place?

 

I'm getting in a right panic lol as iv never had a tick on any of my pets.

 

So any helpful info would be great..

You can bye a little gadget to remove ticks or get some white spirit and some cotton buds, dab whites spirit on the ticks, NOT the ferret, the ticks will drop off after a couple of minutes.

Old trick i used to use on ticks in akward places that cant be removed easy is get your missis nail varnish and cover the white sack with it, it dries in a couple of minutes and stops them breathing and they drop off ( you can use any colour )

Get a o tom tick remover easy to use ive had them out of ferrets ears a few times.

Dont bother with old school remedy's. Best not to put anything on the ticks as they can purge and increase the chance of cross contamination when they empty themselves in you or your pet.

So once I spray them with frontline will they just fall off or will I still need to pull them off as my ferret are on speed lol and don't keep still..

I use a tick twister as mentioned above. Frontline is probably the best stuff to use and always good to have in case the ferrets pick up anything.

I got the frontline spray today and the Otom pullers, pulled some ticks off of the ferrets and then sprayed the frontline on a glove and give them a good rub.

 

But what I would like to know is now that iv spray them all and removed what I can see/ferrets let me but will I be forever removing tick now when I take them ferreting? Iv only been out once and it was my first time and a first for the ferrets too.

 

So what I'm asking is when you take your ferrets out do you find tick on your ferrets every time or is it that once they are protected with frontline you don't notice/find them as much.

Youre unlikely to find ticks everytime just the odd occasion. The bigger problem for me last 2 years has been harvest mites early in the season, got rid both times with beaphur.

Its the start of the season, and its still mild ( down here any way). Once the frost breaks, you wont get many... Not the tiny babies in the ears and around the eyes, the occasional big one can be pulled pretty easy. If Im off out for a day with big numbers expected, I give them a few squirts before we off. They dont usually come home with any..

I just went out to take a look at the ferrets to see how they where getting most of the bigger ones are gone but there are some tiny white one on the backs of the ears. I will have to wait and see if they have come off in the morning. How much do you spray on the glove? As I did two sprays on one glove per ferret. Is that enough.

Never used frontline spray but doesn't it work in the same way as the spot-on stuff does on the dogs?

I mean doesn't it keep killing the ticks for a few weeks after application?

Aye every time my son see,s that spot on stuff for sale he buys it and does the ferrets , Aldi must of had it on sale as he's bought a load and my black lab has a silver streak between her shoulders and at it the base of her tail . Being honest I only every had on tick on a ferret after we work some sheep pasture

Spose it depends on the size of the ferrets. I got big jills so I`ll give them around 6 pumps for an infestation, more for my big hob. I think the amount of fur matters too, as it suggests using more for long haired breeds. They way I see it is I want kill the the lot first go and not let them build up any immunity and resistance by giving them half doses.. If they`re not gone in the next few days just apply it with a cotton bud on them.

Last season my ferrets ran through a 'tick Bomb' never seen anything like it; Bob Martin now do Fipronil in there deflea stuff in the supermarkets.

 

I use a pippette a month during working season and that beaphor stuff for lice and mites. Don't bother when they aren't working....

 

Some great advice I got off here I now religiously do; is give there fur a little inspection when they come out the warrens you'll find the odd tick climbing 'in' on the guard hairs which you can brush off before they get to the skin.... Saves even more bother!
