PENCHECKER 41
My 4 year old Springer bitch has just ruptured her rear left cruciate ligament. Vet recommends an operation so after some feedback on success rates and longevity from people with working Springers please. Quote Link to post
deerdogs 418
Had it with a lurcher, his leg was never the same again! Couldn't manage a night long hard nights graft! May be different with a spaniel compared to a running dog though Quote Link to post
PENCHECKER 41
Thanks, I'm going for a second opinion on Tuesday from another vet who does the surgery. Just keeping my fingers crossed at the moment. Quote Link to post

Vet recommends an operation so after some feedback on success rates and longevity from people with working Springers please. For an active working dog,..the success rate is not too good... Obviously, you have to do something,..but do ask around and be prepared to travel in order to secure the treatment that offers the best hope. There are different methods of operating on the cruciate,..some more expensive/worthwhile than others... All the best to you and the wee tyke,...regards, Phil. Quote Link to post
PENCHECKER 41
Thanks Phil Im hoping for good news tomorrow, ill post the results. Quote Link to post
Rabid 1,936
Sorry to hear that, not good news, I don't have a springer, but I have a mastiff x Dane who damaged hers when she decided it was a good idea to try and run a fallow down, we were advised operation was the only way forward, but when we looked into it she would certainly never run again, and would need a lead life, also the chances of the op succeeding at all were not in her favour, so we went for the rest and recoup option as vet recommended the same odds as an op either way, happy to say she is almost like she was, no major hikes or runs now, and she gets a bit light on it if she over does things, but generally she is fine and you would never know. I really hope the odds are in your favour tomorrow, best of luck. Quote Link to post
Sighthound 49
As above my old school vet advised against an op and advised rest and recoup for my spaniel and much to my surprise it worked it took over 3 months but she's 11 now and still puts in a shift at the beating. 1 Quote Link to post
PENCHECKER 41
Thanks Chaps for sharing your experiences, I had heard that RnR was a option. I'll quiz the vet on it tomorrow. Quote Link to post
PENCHECKER 41
Thanks for your feedback boys, the second opinion by a vet who actually carries out the surgery was great news. He couldn't feel excessive movement in the joint so doesn't need to operate. I'm made up! Just a few months now with only light walking and hopeful she will be ok - happy days! 1 Quote Link to post
Rabid 1,936
Really pleased for you mate, just take it easy and let nature take its course, worked for me, may be worth keeping a few rimadyl handy as they really helped my old girl Quote Link to post
