A good start would be to have a well handled well socialised ferret around dogs, ferrets need to gain the trust of your dogs so they are at ease around them.I always have at least two such ferrets as i

I used to have terriers for ferreting and never lost a ferret but they were educated as pups which is the important bit. This chap was 110% with ferrets and really new the ferreting game what I would

ive always worked terriers and ferrets together, never had an accident either, always as neil said got them so use to each other , ive never experienced terriers grabbing ferrets and my old border b

If terriers can catch bolted rabbits then why are we feeding 50 lb lurchers when we could be feeding 16 lb terriers ?

Think about it.

It's good to see lads still working terriers and ferrets alongside one another, I was beginning to think it was a forgotten art.

Terriers don't catch bolted rabbits as such though they can grab a bolter if they are in the right place thats what nets are for :)

to catch the ones the terrier misses lol atb at

 i like it but with mr terrier behind it as long as it has a decent honker the rabbit is in the bag it will get pushed to ground again and either netted or killed in no matter how thick the cover

Lurchers obviously have there own virtues and good ones too

Anyone work their terriers with ferrets? Any info appreciated on how you get them used to each other. Thanks

A good start would be to have a well handled well socialised ferret around dogs, ferrets need to gain the trust of your dogs so they are at ease around them.I always have at least two such ferrets as i do a fare bit ferreting with the collie's ,but i also expect my terriers to be rock steady too.i find letting your pup see the ferrets through the cage first to see how the pup reacts, and if the pup is over boisterous couple firm words too keep it in check, when pup settles down i allow pup and ferret to share a bowl of milk. i repeat this process daily for couple of weeks.all my dogs see my ferrets on a daily bases whether there worked or not to keep them used to each other.ive had terriers pull rats from holes with ferret still hanging on rat ,the dogs no the difference even in the heat of a hunt.one farm in particular i hunt i let ferrets and terriers loose in wood pile and never have a problem with dogs and ferrets. The more time you put in when dogs are young the better the results.

All my terriers are trained to work around ferrets, the trouble with terriers, especially when they go into excitable work mode,is they have an un-savoury habit of forgetting all the early education in these situations, ive about 6 terriers,id possibly trust 2 of them with ferrets.

Suppose they might confuse ferret with mink? Are they same smell? Was reading an interesting book, the author had broken his terriers to ferrets and could still hunt stoat and weasel with them, he stipulated that any terrier he had was also broken to rabbit! It's an old book and the author would have mainly hunted fox, it details his hunting experiences in the 1970's.
