Best Cross For All Rounder

A couple have bull x and some saluki grey what is good for a starter? How would you pick a dog from the litter?

I'd say pick a pup of the cross, type or even purebred that you actually really like, cos if you don't actually like it you won't get the best out of it

A Bull x like Matt said was a dog capable of taking all British quarry before the ban, possibly not the quickest so if you need a dog with more than just brawn so to speak..a Collie Grey x Bull Grey or a Saluki Grey x Bull Grey or just a plain old Saluki lurcher would perhaps suit your needs better? I have had dogs a fair while now..and yet to see a jack of all trades that were the best at everything but have owned and seen dogs work to a fair standard at most tasks but there is usually atleast one chink in their armour or maybe I just have crap dogs and also witnessed substandard mutts over the years? One thing I would say is stay away from 1st x's of ANY type ...I await to be shot down here but id go second generation personally..just speaking from experience here..obviously there will be plenty on here with genuine 1st x's which they are perfectly happy with..ive had several in 30 odd year,none were half decent to me anyway..all were shy in the stamina department,all lacked strength of bone to some degree..I like a dog with a good framework to it strong in bone and "robust" if you like? ..capable of withstanding a knock or a grueller of a shift in the field..something ive not found with my genuine 1st x types..anyhow I know jack shit just what ive had the displeasure of owning at some stage lol..infact none of mine could withstand the workload I forced upon them..they all failed miserably unfortunately :-(

That's the one buddy..."you can only get out of a dog what you put into it" ..by giving them a warm clean bed, quality feeding,training and the work put infront of them you can do no more..after that it really is up to the dog Kieran

just get something from 2 lurchers doing the job the x doesn't matter imo as long as the parents have what you are looking for you have a grate start most importent thing is you put the time and efort into the dog and put stuff in front of it

Generally what would you boys prefer when sourcing an "all rounder"...

 

Parents doing different jobs ie a saluki type cross with a bull type. Or a lamp dog crossed with a day dog etc.

 

Or parents which are already jacks of all trade? Lurcher x lurcher.

Id go for any of the 3 , but if i wasnt going for the parents being jack of all trades id prefer the parents to be real good at there game ... eg not any old bullx put to any old saluki x or any old lamp dog put to any old day dog Edited November 9, 2014 by chid21
