sussex 5,777
Started on the Doe's today ,The plan was to get over there early , up in a seat & see what daylight brought in the way of deer ..having sat in the seat the other week & had doe's by the dozen walking virtually right under the seat I was confident I'd manage a couple the worst way ...I left home at 5.30 am , gusty s/w wind fairly mild it wasn't looking to bad .Twenty minutes later I'm picking my way in pitch black to the seat , the spitting rain becoming just a tadge heavier. I couldn't see or hear if I bumped any deer but as I climbed the seat the bloody heavens opened ..But as I was in the seat I stayed put ,hoping it would pass fairly quickly ...fat chance it poured down .As daylight broke nothing moved .One hour after getting up , I was getting out , having seen one poor buck & doe neither which was shootable I returned to the motor to get the quad to try the other side of the farm . Having changed coats & hat I drove over to the top fields , I passed these on the way in but could see nothing in the darkness , in the light the site of 150+ deer told me why I had drawn a blank in the wood .Leaving the quad by the hedge a 200mtr crawl got me into the bracken that runs between the two fields , another crawl got me within shooting distance .Picking a yearling (she was nearest) I put the cross behind her front leg & squeezed , big jump slightly backward & she took of , flat out for about 20mtr before collapsing .One down , 149 exit the fields .Her accounted for & loaded up I made my way back to the valley where I had been first thing , slowly ticking my way through a couple of doe's stopped on a bank & looked on , one looked a little to long ,as I cut the engine the rifle was already on the rest & she was already in the scope .No 2 ..number 3 followed twenty min's later with more or less the same scenario as number two ...The hoist was fixed , number one was gralloched , down the track for the other two , 15 min later all three gralloched , arses out , heads of I was on my way home .Stopping only to put up a temporary seat for this evening in the top field... Back at 2.30 in the belief the deer would be out early I was back , so to were the deer . in exactly the same place as this morning .The high seat plan was a non runner, it was back to the crawling job , through the bracken again , but right to the end this time getting me on to a pricket laying down , not far away , down hill of the bipod I put the ir on the back of its head & just as I squeezed he decided to scratch his ear with his foot , the round dug in the dirt , he looked back not knowing what happened but new enough that this wasn't the place to be , up he got & trotted away , 50 mtr further out he stopped , turned broadside & looked back to where he had come from ...mistake ! No 4 ..everthing else left the field , Up in the seat for an hour or so nothing else showed .His trip round to the tree took a few minutes , the gralloch took a few more The four weighed in at 59, 49,60, & 63lb ... 4 Quote Link to post
