marshman 7,758
Went to my two nephews have their first boxing gym show ( basically a bout with no winners ) . Anyway my younger nephew is 8 and only started at hes local club week last week hes only been to the gym twice , and the trainer got him a fight today with a lad that's obviously been going a lot longer and had far to much knowledge for my nephew. All my nephew knew to do was cover up hang on untill it had finished , he hasn't been going long enough to learn how to throw a one two let alone combinations or even have any sort of footwork . Now I don't want to seem the sort to complain because my nephew to a few slaps but am I wrong or do you think he was over matched ? The problem is theres so much of this white collar lark these days theres boxing gyms opening up all over the place meaning the good traditional gyms and clubs proven over time are being overlooked.....an aba coach must be nominated by an affiliated club to ensure kids are training within a safe environment......very few coaches of any worth would let an 8 year old kid take a smack on the chops within 2 or 3 months of first walking in a gym. You are right not to sell the club or the chap out thats not necessary just dont go back there......your in London somewhere right ?......if you cant get something sorted for the boy id be happy to drop you a few numbers of respected clubs/coaches etc cheers mate appreciate that , my nephews are S/E london way and I know of a few old established clubs that are still about . So I'll have a look at them first and see what they're like then I can go from there. Again I appreciate it ?.

If thier just sparring the experienced lad should of been taking it easy on him, and the trainer should of being reinforcing that if not change gyms there are plenty of good ones about that will spend time with the lad
rob284 1,682
I though the minimum age for a bout in the aba was 11?

marshman 7,758
I though the minimum age for a bout in the aba was 11? it was a gym show like an exhibition bout with no winners for lads from different clubs all through the county . Basically getting used to the whole thing , weigh in being matched and then fighting 3 short rounds . It's pre 11 year old and medical card although there was some older lads that were green and had started at a later age , like I said just to get them used to the while thing . blackmaggie 3,376
rather than let the lad get mulled i was told in that if that was happening they should of told the other lad to take it easy and let the other lad throw some shots so he could work on his defence and movement but sounds harsh what did happen and its all about building experience and confidence
rob284 1,682
These exhibitions are basically unregistered bouts then... dont like the sound of it. Most gyms ive known have a minimum age of 10. 8 is too young in my opinion as they dont all have the concentration span required to train and learn properly at that age. gnasher16 30,356
Kids can train from any age but cant compete until 11 at which time he,ll get his me3 and become a junior until age 17 when he becomes a senior.......11 - 14 year olds will box 3 x 90 second rounds......14 - 17 year olds 3 x 2,s.....except for Internationals a fighter under 17 cant concede more than 1 year in age in any bout. The 4 most well known clubs in London are Islington in the North....Repton in the East......Fitzroy Lodge in the South......Dale Youth in the West......plenty of others but they are generally recognised as the top London clubs............doesnt matter what level a kid reaches in the sport theres a lot worse places a kid could be learning about life than boxing gyms in my opinion.
zigzag dan 784
Gnash , don't know if you agree but its easier to pull stunts in the amateurs than in pros ! .............My nephew has just turned 11 and has had 2 fights recently , 1w , 1l ,thing is he has been in the gym 2/3 nights per week since he was 6 , so he was a very experienced " starter " a bit unfair on his opponent to be honest , he lost his 2nd fight to a disgracefull " home show " decision in Coventry , even the winners father apologised for it ! My son once boxed a lad who had a new boxing card due to he was English but had become Muslim so changed his name , he was supposed to have had only 2 fights but it was obvious he had had a lot more , my lad got done on a split decision but the winner went on to take silver in the Tri Nations , so he was obviously a class act , then there was the night my lads opponents corner through the towel in as my lad was warming up on the pads , and gave us £200 to " go home quietly " ! There lad held the Regional belt and they didn't want him losing it infront of his own towns supporters .................anyway we had the money and didn't go quietly , and it all got rather naughty ! From a competetive point of view ive never liked amateur boxing .....ive said for years the whole sport for amateurs needs looking at from kids bouts right through to the seniors......i think the coaches and organisers, fundraisers etc do a cracking job but they are let down by the rules and regs they have to play by and of course the ego,s that come into play............i believe it hurts the pro game simply because boys are turning pro far too early where if the amateur circuit was how it should be potentially good fighters would gain those extra couple of years in the amateurs that would hold them in good stead for the switch to the pros which is a much easier step for a 20/21 year old young man to take than a 17/18 year old kid.......but alas, most cant wait to get out the ams and i dont blame them.
