The whole problem with breeding from older bitches for the first time is that the ligaments which tie the joints together aren't as elastic as they are in younger dogs. This can lead to birthing problems if the birth canal isn't able to open wide enough: then you need a caesarean, which costs a fortune and isn't reimbursable through pet insurance, if you have it. The birth process can also be a lot slower, with weaker contractions and the bitch getting very tired which can mean dead puppies towards the end of the labour, and you still may end up with a caesarean to remove dead pups that haven't been able to survive a prolonged labour.

Don't believe all you hear about smaller litters either: I've bred from 9 year olds (not their first litters) and had litters of 9 and 10!!!

If you aren't an experienced breeder it is also hard to tell with the bitch is in real difficulty, so new breeders need to have an experienced person on hand to help or let them know if there is a problem: such as a breech birth, or the bitch just getting too tired to push any more.

Good luck!

i bred my bitch for the first time at 8 ,she had 8 pups but 1 was still born, she had difficulty in the last one but was born naturally.

if i had my time again i would have bred younger, but selfishly kept putting it off,as her seasons usually in the hunting season,

either that or bought in as its much easier lol,

incidentally foxdigger off here bred just before me to the same sire but older bitch ,had 14 but most died,so can go either way
