gnasher16 30,491
Does anybody know if anything exists to test a bitches fertlity ?......im not talking about progesterone levels to find the correct timing for a mating......but rather her fertility itself and whether she is still ovulating and indeed whether those eggs are fertilizable ( if thats a word ) As an example.............you are paying a lot of money for a bitch to breed a litter......but first want to make sure she is physically able ? sandymere 8,263
I’m sure the vet would be willing to charge you for an examinations but other than perhaps an ultrasound for pyometra or abnormality, maybe check bloods in general and white cell counts in particular looking for signs of infection, not sure how useful it would be. Its years since i bred a litter i just wondered how far things have come as someone asked me this question recently and i didnt know what to tell them..... If theres not a specific test im wondering if a smear/swab was taken and evaluated for cell changes over a certain period of time that would at least confirm if ovulation has taken place....would it not ?......ok that doesnt mean shes releasing fertile eggs but would at least confirm shes capable of ovulating ? skycat 6,174
Yes, you can do a test for ovulation. Some people do this to make sure they are getting a bitch mated at exactly the right time in her season: very useful if you have a bitch that ovulates either much earlier or later than the norm.

HPR 1,161
Not sure he's defiantly worth a go they can do it on humans so must be able to do it on dogs and if any one will know he will
beast 1,884
testing kits etc will ensure that the correct hormones are active, but as you say gnasher that doesn't necessarily mean that the bitch is actually producing valid eggs. it is possible to ultrasound the ovaries and look at the eggs, state of development of them, whether ovulation has occurred recently etc, it is even possible to take an egg directly from the ovary and examine its structure. all this, however, is really specialist stuff and will cost LOTS!!! ( we had a cow looked at a couple of years ago, and they had to get the bloke over from germany, cost about £4000 as i recollect.) far more than a stud fee, so i guess you should just get the bitch bred and hope for the best
gnasher16 30,491
Thanks for the advice mate.....its the cost of buying the bitch and then she doesnt even come in season that would be the worry ( not for me im just trying to find out on someone else behalf )..... like anything i guess the risk/reward needs weighing up.....cheers
