Bluestaff 11
As many people use dogs whilst ferreting im wondering at what age you would take your pup out to see rabbits hit the nets and to familiarise themselfs whith ferrets and the goings on around a warren ? Would you let ur pup rome free or keep it on a lead etc ? Thanks in advance Matt Quote Link to post

tsteve9999 456
As long as the pup doesn't nip at the ferrets it can only be good for the dog imo, mines been going from a few months old. Expect it to piss about and get in the way occasionally while it's young but they soon learn. Quote Link to post
Neal 1,891
I always thought it was best to wait until they were older...but...after some advice from somebody on this forum I introduced my last ferreting dog when she was only a few months old (she's now seven) and she turned out to be the best ferreting dog I've ever had. As for whether or not to tie them up; I found she learnt quicker if allowed to do whatever she wanted but I'm lucky that she cottoned on quickly and I didn't loose too many as a result...or I may have changed my mind. Guest vin
They don't learn owt at home or in the kennel...lol. get em out and about as soon as poss. Obviously helps if your in the company of an older and experienced dog that can help to educate the pup. Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,348
I had mine out straight after his jabs and he is steady as a rock around ferrets and nets. He marks and will stay above a sett til the ferret appears. He was grabbing rabbits on his 1st trip Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,137
I think it settles them down quicker once the y click Quote Link to post

Bluestaff 11
Thanks for the advice guys , shame theres nobody local that i know that has a rabbiting dog for her to learn off and help bring on ... I dont mind the challenge of doing it solo but as said it would help to follow and run along side an experienced dog ! I can see me having my hands full with ferrets/rabbits and the pup but all part and parcel until it clicks and the dog and i can trust eachother fully . Matt Quote Link to post

Matt They soon learn it their selves get them out they soon click on to the ferreting game, be sturn at 1st, as you don't want a dog knocking nets all over the place or wondering off from the action, obedience is the vital tool then the rest clicks into place 1 Quote Link to post
Neal 1,891
I prefer to start them solo so that they're more likely to find their own way of doing it. It also negates any jealousy problems or picking up bad habits. 2 Quote Link to post
