Can they live in a family environment?

Both mine are good with the family they are primarily work dogs ( I am self employed working these two week in week out)

But they can come in the house and are fine with my other dogs and family members like I said its a lot to do with how you train them and what you want them to do the military dogs are far less sociable as that's what they require but I require a dog that I can work private sites or big events and a completely unsociable dog would be a nightmare on a big event.

It all depends what you want the dog for, there are some serious lines out there and these dogs are more civil ( this means they will readily bite pretty much anyone you command them to ) there are bloodlines that are not quite as civil, but like anything you must decide what you are going to require from your dog then pick a suitable breeder and bloodline. I have a civil dog and then a more social dog there are pros and cons to both but having the two means i can work pretty much anything from really dodgy places where you need a good dog to have your back to the more quieter places where a more social dog is needed.You can buy trained dogs but these are costly and sometimes aren't trained the way you want but if you do decide to buy a dog for personal protection you MUST go to a qualified trainer as teaching a dog to bite people is a serious game and there are laws that you can fall foul of plus the danger of hurting people. The most important thing to understand is that these dogs are trained to bite and hold at all cost so where as your average dog may bite you its basically a nip warning you, when you teach a dog like a Malinois to bite they will bite and hold until told to release thus causing much more damage and injury so it's important to know what your doing before embarking on this type of endeavour. If you do it right you can have a good family dog that will protect you if needed but like i have said you need to choose the correct type as picking a very high drive civil bloodline could cause you more aggro than it's worth.

Thank you Mike, that was very helpfull.

I will take my time over this and as i am not in a poisition to get one yet, have plenty of time to look around and talk to differnt handlers ect.

If i do go ahead in the future and get one, it would be for protection of a family home and some k9 work and training for different excersises like, finding ect, but i dont need a dog for full on civil work.

What lines would you recomend Mike?

Unfortunately I'm no expert on bloodlines lol and there are many different lines of malinois but i would buy something from proven lines either KNPV or Mondioring are good sports taht test the dogs exstensively .

My ex boyfriend bought a dog pup because it was different :/ he regretted it later on. The dog was a nutcase, always needed something to do and was quite aggressive, they look the part but they are far too much dog for me!

That's the most common complaint over here. No off switch. Most still prefer a GSD.
