mushroom 13,193
Always a tough one as artic said above can damage growth plates etc Now I have a bit of a problem with this as street dogs will trot, run everywhere from a very young age with no problems later. Pups will charge around a park at full pelt with no issues etc. Mo is take it easy and don't do too much too quickly Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
I guess it depends a lot on the distance covered like anything start them off slowly and build them up. Realistically ask yourself how far do they run when off the lead compared to when jogging on it and it is most likely a fraction of what they cover off the lead. The ground you jog on might be a factor, covered a lot of miles with my dogs running up to about 20 miles at times, road work can be very hard on their feet if you don't build them up steadily or if they have a break from jogging. Far point about growth plates but depends a lot on the individual dog and breed type and I think too much is made of exercising pups too much if I am honest. That sad alwas est to air on the side of caution I suppose. I know that my dogs enjoy a good run, but they are never as knackered after a run as a long wander off lead atb. Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,193
Once mine are old enough I get them alongside the skates Quote Link to post
terryd 8,552
if your a runner you know what a pounding the road gives to the old joints so personally I wouldn't start to young at least not with any distance and build the dog up like you would your self Edited November 4, 2014 by terryd Quote Link to post

Pups will charge around a park at full pelt with no issues etc. Mo is take it easy and don't do too much too quickly I'd say the difference there is that the pups are exercising at their own pace, resting when they feel the need. The danger with jogging a pup too young is it's all too easy for an inexperienced owner to not read the pup well and push it too far too soon. Edited November 5, 2014 by BGD 1 Quote Link to post
