Walther G22

Recommended Posts

Hopefully,my coterminous shotgun/FAC license will be here soon. I will then be in the market for a .22.

Collecting my shotgun from repair,I spotted a Walther G22 on the gunsmith's rack. It looked attractive to me,but I don't know anyone who has one.

I have googled a few articles, and apart from a poor feel to the trigger on early ones, caused by the operating rod needed due to the "bullpup" design, and some failures to cycle with certain ammo,I have found nothing bad about it.Has anyone on here got any experience with one?

Comments good or bad appreciated. As I was in a rush (as usual),I didn't ask for it to be unchained,so have not even held one.

Also thinking about "all weather" stocked Ruger and Magtech.

I read the same things you did mate, and while it looks interesting I've always plumped for the basic traditional rifle layout.

Remington make a good synthetic finish semi-auto .22, might be worth looking at.

Looked at one last year when my missus was getting herself a 22 for plinking / targets. Had a few shots on the range off a benchrest. Trigger pull was a bit nasty but no more so than an out-of-the-box Ruger. Accuracy was pretty crap although that could be down to dodgey mounts/scope as it was a club gun. Really depends on what you want it for mate.

Well, thanks for the comments so far gents. The rifle, whatever I get, will be used for rabbits mainly. I will be helping to control numbers on a nearby airfield. I expect to be shooting 25 to 100 yard ranges, because as you will appreciate,it's fairly flat, open ground and you have to keep to the fringes for any cover.

Steer clear buddy, we,ve sold several, and had no end of trouble with them, and have had to refund on some. If you want a reliable 10/22, get a tricked out ruger. If you want a serious 100 yard rimmy, get a cz, ruger77 , or anschutz, bolt action.

I tried out one of these - no in a big way would be my verdict. they jam, they foul something wicked, and they scare the hell out of any members of the public who see them. They're got up to look like a military weapon, and I think aimed at the Bedsit Rambo market.

If you want a semi (and I've steered clear of them for years till now) take a look at the ones that Rimfiremagic do - just bought one, and it's a great bit of gear. Ruger reciever, synthetic stock, carbon fibre barrel, light as a feather and gives 2" groups at 100 yards which is pretty good with hollowpoint factory ammo.

Here's mine with a few odds and ends it produced the other day.

Bloody smashing bit of gear, I take my hat off to it. The cheque's in the post, by the way. The only thing I'm going to alter is add an extended Picatinny rail from Volquartson. For the nightvision stuff.

OK,thanks for those opinions gents. Sounds like a G22 may be off the christmas list then!

Never heard of a rimfiremagic brownbear, is it made near you? I see baldy built it,so it's mainly british made?

Is the whole barrel carbon fibre? If so,is it going to last?Would like to hear more about it,website etc?

Geoff.

Recently bouught a fully tricked up SYSS special off a mate of mine who could not hit a barn with it if he was inside, it is now my dedicated night gun fitted with the Starlight Archer nv, brilliant set up on the rabbit clearance. Mate of mine who is a keeper down here loves his G22, for my daytime work though it has to be my BRNO every time. :gunsmilie:

Just google 'rimfiremagic' or South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies. It's a Ruger semi, but I think the only bit they keep is the reciever, the rest is all custom bits from other maunfacturers. The trigger's about 2lb pressure, it's really incredibly light and it seems very accurate. I was on the range with it this afternoon, 'double-tappping' targets, and when I popped two off together, they were hitting about 1/2" apart. Enough to sink any bunnyrabbit in the German Navy.

Geoff, the gun the lads are on about, is basically our "off the shelf" custom gun. It starts life as a std ruger 10/22. I then take it apart, and throw everything apart from the reciever and bolt, and trigger housing in the bin.

The bolt is first checked for headspace, and correct firing pin protrusion, its then fitted with a volquartsen EDm match extractor, and the original one binned. No other bolt modifactions are done, especially to the shape, as this can actually add to cycling problems, despite all the "experts" saying otherwise. The bolt was designed that shape to work.

The reciever is then checked an lapped if neccesary, then fitted with the barrel of choice. In the case of this rifle, its a 12.5 inch volquartsen carbon fibre barrel. The actual bore is stainless steel, stretched between two stainless caps, and fitted together cryogenically. Its proabarbly the most accurate .22 barrel made, apart from the volquartsen "snake" at £400.

The bolt goes in fitted with a vq titanium bolt handle, and various lubricants.

The trigger group is then fitted with a power custom hammer and sear kit, and "other" work. :D Giving a pull of 2lbs, or 2 1/2 if the customer prefers. Lastly, its assembled with a quality recoil buffer, into a hogue stock in black or green, included in the price, is either a muzzle adaptor, or muzzle brake.

The weapon is very light, and extremely accurate, it will cycle with any ammo, and should hold 1/2" groups at 50 yards.

I,ve not gone into all the modifications as some are trade secrets, learnt from many years building these rifles, suffice it to say, we dont give conditional guarantees with the gun, if it doesn,t perform , it comes back, and is put right, regardless of how old it is. If you are anywhere near Barnsley, call in for a chat.

Can vouch for what Baldie says about their after sales, the mate i bought mine off kept sending it back to them, and fair play they humoured him even though everyone except him knew the problem was with him not the gun, picked myself up a real bargain, he has gone on to have a RPA made up for him in 6mm br and he is doing very well with it.

Hello Chaps, new here and seem to have the same reuirements as the OP, so I hope you don't mind me adding to the post.

I have been shooting shotgun for years but have just had a FAC through. I will be shooting rabbits mainly again, but I'm really trying to guage whether or not I'd be better off with 1.7hmr or .22, specifically in terms of distances. I will shoot from an elevated positon (4th storey, a convenient tower at the top of the house) and have about 12 acres, around me. I'd estimate a max range of about 200 yards.

My other consideration is noise, as we have horses stabled. I understand a 1.7 moderator would require a more specialist fitment?

Finally any recommendations on models, and dealers in the Wiltshire area, much appreciated. I shall continue reading meanwhile!

Cheers
