Daz39 962
....Free ride into town because the ticket machine is bust on the bus.. ....Watch Newcastle beat Liverpool..... ....Get out shot by Mac 9-5 on MY perm!! I know, bloody shocking, you invite a mate onto your perm and he bags almost twice what you do?! It is a first mind you! Hadn't been out in 3 weeks so gave Mac & Matt a shout last night. Matt is crocked so couldn't get out but I met Mac at 7 at one of my perms. I hadn't been up in 5-6 weeks here and I had driven by the other day to see nice new green shoots in the fields. It was a good windy night last night so all was set up for a good night. Into the first field and Mac spots one right away, hes off as usual, gets in range, lays down, and starts cocking about with his flip down covers on the new scope. Well by the time he'd got the covers off, the rabbit was away...and I'd spotted one so it was my crack. I spotted 3 sets of eyes and went after the closest, I went prone and took a shot, a good solid "crack" of the 0.177 on the rabbit and as I went to get up, I spotted one of the other rabbits still sat there, so I turned slightly, got him in my cross hair, crack down her went. When I picked the second rabbit up, I looked round to see if Mac had picked up my first, only for him to say you missed him. I didn't believe him so went to look, but no damn sign. The new crop is only 2" high, so nothing to hide in. Too damn eager to get the second rabbit and I hadn't made certain of the first. I'm assuming I hit a stone just behind him or something. We continued down the field and Mac sees a rabit right on the edge of the perm. He goes over, lays prone and I hang back. I look thorough my scope and I can see 5-6 rabbits all hopping round Mac. He looked like a kid in a sweet shop but the sods wouldn't sit still. I heard the Scorpion blatt 2-3 shots but the rabbits just sat there. In the end they all hopped through the fence unscathed. Mac was doing his usual curse. We decided to check the scopes to be sure and Macs were out a good chunk. He sorts them out and we set off again. Still in the first field, Mac spots another rabbit on another boundary line. He goes over, lays prone and spends a freekin age sorting out his bolt action, again, by the time he is ready to shoot, the rabbits beggered off. I'm giving the old fella some stick by now, talk of barn doors, fumbly fingers, taking too damn long to take a shot. By my count he's given 5-6 rabbits an extra few weeks to live with his unaccustomed fannying around......it wasn't to last though. We moved to the next field and split up, each taking a boundary line to walk paralell to each other. I stalked 2-3 rabbits, managed 1 shot and the damn thing flipped into brambles and I couldn't find him. I see the flash of red light from Mac, hear the pop of the scorpian and so I carry on merrily. I leave Mac and go to the next field where I see another group of 6-7 rabbits in one corner. I go up, go prone and take 2 shots, both of which are caught by the wind and miss badly. The rabbits were off and I decided to only shoot in lulls of the wind gusts from now on. Mac's been gone ages when i see him again with a grin. "got owt?" - No mate missed 2, what about you "oh I hit two, back in the car, the Macs back" haha. When he'd shut up boasting, he pointed to a pair of eyes and says "off you go lad, see if you can catch up". I dutyfully bagged my second rabbit. So it is 3-2 to Mac. We looked in a couple more fields but the rabbits were away before we could get to shooting positions. After going back to the car, we went back to field 1. Nothing much doing here until we get to the bottom where i see eyes. I stalk a rabbit for about 10 mins going one way then the other (was like watching Mac after the hares) utill I finally get a shot on him and down he went. I think Mac must have had another one at some point too as we were 3-4 at this point. We went back to the 2nd field again and we both came away with a rabbit each, decent size ones too. We loaded Mac's tank up with the rabbits and drove round to another field of mine. Round the other perm (it actually surrounds a 3rd perm of mine, one of my work sites) we split up again, Mac taking one perimeter, me the other. Now, this is where things go utterly crazy. First up, I chased 7-8 rabbits without getting close, then I see a good 10-12 all run into one spot so I lay up. I lay there for 10-15 mins when there is a right racket in the bushes to my right, then THUMP, this big buck rabbit almost knocks my gun over bursting from cover, he then runs a perfect circle around me and I think he has gone back in the tree line. I risk a look over my shoulder with my spare lamp to see the sod sat 10 yards from my boots! I did my best to sit up, turn round and bring the gun on him, but he was away. Bugger it. I then walk back to the car to see Mac, "get any mate" - yurrr FOUR..... eh? For once, Mac had chosen the right path and picked up a great bag of fur. We had 12 in the bag by now, 8 for Mac and 4 for me. We had one more walk out after gutting the first 12. I went to a spot I had seen a big rabbit and laid up. I didn't put my lamp on and tried to hone my night vision. Sure enough I thought I saw a big grey lump of shadow about 25 yrds in front of me. When I looked through the scope I could see a dark grey shadow against a slightly darker grey backdrop. I was about to put the lamp on when he moved and I could make out his head shape shadow, so I took the shot in near darkness and dropped him with a perfect shot. Back to the car and Mac had also picked up one more. 9-5 to the Mac, 14 rabbits for the butcher, coats off, guts out. Cracking 6 hours fun with a gun. Stop reading now if you are squeemish. The last one I shot was hardly dead 2 mins when I started to dress him. He was still warm as I took the skin off (I always take the head off with the coat). As I go to open the belly to gut him, the damn thing is twitching in my hand. I can feel muscle spasms in his legs and abdomen. It really felt very odd, this naked headless rabbit twitching in my hands. First time in 18 months hunting that I have had that. Its an eye opener! Cheers Mac, top night, sorry you missed it Matt, catch you next time out. 12 of the 14 guts out ready to skin. 4 Quote Link to post

Daz39 962
Cheers gents. JJM, sorry mate, these went to the butcher this time. I called him and asked how many I had to get, to get hi mout of bed Sunday morning, haha, he said 15 so we did OK. Mole, these 2 perms had mixy end last year early this year, but its amazing how fast they bounced back. The big field often had 50-100 rabbits on it, I was seeing 30-40 now, so picking back up. Should be good if we can stay mixy free for another 6 months. Andy, was a grand night, its nice to be at the stage I can give him some shite back, mind, his actions spoke louder than words last night, even if the awld bugger can't judge 30 yards anymore! You'll have to come up with him next time out. He's put in a good word for ya, so you are welcome with Mac next time if you fancy it. I can't see him using the raider now, hes totally come out of the closet and has embraced not only multi shot, but also 177..... you can teach an old dog new tricks! 1 Quote Link to post
