Cedric 132
Just popped out to get a rabbit for tomorrows diner, spotted about a dozen in a paddock and slide the rifle through some sheep netting to get a shot – next thing there are blue sparks on the barrel ! I knew there was an electric fence along the top but didn’t spot another wire half way down. Think I’d learn as I get older. But what a nice evening, really warm, walking across the fields in a shirt and light jacket I was about sweating. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
I have one round a pond. Got across it last week, not good, especially as I was around 3 feet from the unit and directly in contact with the ground with my elbow when my hand touched. Mines 1.2J @ 8KV. Been hit by a previous 0.2 J 6.5KV fence before, tense arm muscle spasm and some instant pain, but otherwsie OK. Just made you let go. Got across this one, it was like being hit by a horse in the chest, even after you let go. Spent at least 10 mintues feeling like I'd been kicked in the chest by a mule. I'm guessing the stock probably saved you from the worst, but be careful. The bigger fences really hurt and they reckon can life threatening over 0.8 J, probably only if you have a heart condition, but having taken a blast from a 1.2J one, I can well believe it! HondaHunter 3
I held onto a live fused spur once, turned out the fuse had been temporarily replaced with a pair of pliers because it kept blowing. That was not a good day Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
A tip I got about how to check if a fence was live is to hold a few blades of grass across it, then a tiny jolt can be felt, not enough to bother you. Quote Link to post
HondaHunter 3
or just do not touch it Quote Link to post
rodp 316
Just pee on it .............................. you'll soon know if it's live or not Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Went out earlier to see if charlie wanted to play, he did touched my sticks on the electric fence, bloody hell made me jump Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I can remember (just) as a kid lining up about half a dozen of us, holding hands and the ones on the ends touch the fence, Everyone felt that pulse going through their arms, felt like Popeye's muscles when he'd eaten spinach Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
I used to keep pigs, one day rushing round in the rain to get them fed, I bent down to put some feed in the trough, my forehead touched the wet electric fence, oh my F***ing life, it very nearly knocked me out, wont be doing that again in a hurry 2 Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I watched the bull hit the electric fence with his nose ring one day, never seen the f@#ker anywhere near it since Quote Link to post

Alsone 789
I can remember (just) as a kid lining up about half a dozen of us, holding hands and the ones on the ends touch the fence, Everyone felt that pulse going through their arms, felt like Popeye's muscles when he'd eaten spinach Yeah there's a lot of factors though - the size of the energiser, the length of the fence and thus your distance from the energiser, the quality of the earthing, the amount of vegatation earthing the fence and spilling charge etc. My 0.2J energiser gave a definite muscle spasm and not much else. 1.2J really hits you. I would say it's dangerous to some at least with good earthing and next to the enrgiser. Probably some distance away and it wouldn't be too bad. Either way, after my experience with 1.2J I'd say avoid touching them if you can as they come much larger than 1.2J and if you're close to the energiser then it could be fatal. You can buy a fence tester for less than £20 (I have one for verification purposes). The ones nearer the £20 mark are better though and can be just pressed against the fence without an earth from memory, look a bit like tasers. Some of the cheaper ones are slow to react ie the pulse is too short in duration to light the leds properly making them difficult to see and they require a touching part plus an earth lead. Just remember that the charge comes in pulses 1-2 seconds apart so don't put it on, instantly assume it's safe and grab the wire. Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
How do you get a shock from an electric fence if you are wearing rubber boots i.e. wellies ? Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
How do you get a shock from an electric fence if you are wearing rubber boots i.e. wellies ? When you get into KV, ordinary insulation doesn't always work properly. It takes special insulation to guarantee protection against high tension. That said, they may offer something between complete to some protection. You just can't rely on them with HT. The one good thing about fence energisers is the relative lack of current.
