Ever Thought Shouldnt Have Shot That?

Recommended Posts

One of the woods I have borders another wood I have, the woods are owned by different people and I shoot them both, ive often walked the wood in the summer and watched deer playing in the sun. The area has been cleared for telegraph poles to run through both woods, so its a long open ride that you can see for 500 yds. I walked the top wood and after walking round there was nothing in there. so i thought i had time to walk back to the car and go to another wood a few hundred yards down the road. Having my dog close to me for what was well over 2 hours i let him run as we walked back to the car, he was happy he flushed a few pheasants and went for a dip in the stream, as i got near the area where the telegraph poles cross i could hear some grunting, the dog was still out so there was not a lot i could do so i stood still and the dog returned to me. i walked down the steep bank about 25ft and laid down bi pod out lense covers open. I didn't have to wait long after about 30 mins of laying down this big buck came out of a wood and ran down the ride and stopped just before the place i know they go in, i had one chance and had to be quick he was stood looking around, bearing in mind i was higher than him looking down i lined the cross hairs on the back of his neck and sent one of my new 65 bullets flying in his direction, he just dropped there and then.

Now as i watched his motionless body for a few seconds through the scope his leg straightened out and i thought to my self "how the feck am i going to get that" Where is Kev when i need him? as it was the other side of the river i knew i couldn't drag it up to where i was, i knew the light was fading, and access from the other side would take me an hour to drag it, if i could move it. I worked out it would be about 600 yds to the road and i didn't have the key to the gate as the farmer had it back in the summer as he lost his and i wasnt expecting to be in there.

so i walked back to the jeep drove to my yard had to get to the quad as its not been out yet and was buried behind loads of bits, so a good shuffle round and get the trailer out i drove to the farm to get key and went to the place i park when i shoot the other wood and unloaded the quad, not wanting to leave the dog in the jeep he came along as well, fighting through bracken, brambles and a log that i grounded out on i reached the buck and he was even bigger than i thought.

Im a believer in not gralloching on site so i began to lift him onto the back of the quad, i say lifting i think cuddling is a better word, and we steadily made our way back.

home sorted and weighed in at 127llb

in the pic below you can see 2 crosses, that is where i was and where it was hit, the distance as the bullet travelled was no more than 150yds but it was a 60 yds walk downhill, cross a river, and 60 yds back up the other side.

2nd pic is him loaded on quad,

sorry for dark pics but i was fecked, and thought many times im gonna stick to rabbits.
