sussex 5,777
No great story about to nights buck other than it needed going , up in the seat fairly late after a hectic day doing nothing but chase my arse of I got home at half three , loaded the quad , gear & dog & over to the farm ,not actually getting in the seat till 4.30 .Bumping a couple of doe's & fawns on route it was as nice an evening weather wise as you could wish for .This buck came into the field at the top by the road & made his way diagonally down towards me .Still out a couple of hundred yds a quick rattle of the antlers got his attention & he came on in ..My initial thoughts were he looked a good buck , but as he closed in I could see only one decent antler & a single point , I let him get close enough to see if it was a broken one or was infact growing like it ..not a break he's days were over ...On checking him he was blind in one eye with some new damage to it possibly down to rutting ...Gralloched washed & tagged it weighed a respectable 118lb .. 4 Quote Link to post

novice 25
Any thoughts on how he lost the eye, once you'd had a chance to inspect the carcass? An injury while in velvet, to explain the antler, or do you think the antler developed as a malform as a result of the existing injury? Malforms always interest me, so apologies for the questions! sussex 5,777
Hello mate , my thoughts were a malform as a result of the injury . The eye was completely shut & almost healed over , I wouldn't be surprised if that was from the last rut , the fresh wound just below the pedicle was a puncture type that was scabbed over ,most likely from this years rut ...he certainly seemed to go head first into every thing .. sussex 5,777
Interesting. Are you boiling out the trophy? Novice No mate , cut of the one antler for the stick boys or may keep it to see if it fits with a few others here for a chandelier .I made a couple earlier this year & several people have asked for one .so I might hang on to a few & see what I can make of them ..
