Scope For 17 Hmr

I have a cz 455 17 hmr.im wanting to purchase a new scope.i curently have the simmons whitetail classic 3.5x10-50 but with the zoom cranked up a crow is just a small dot at 100yards.what would be a adiquate scope my buget is arount the £200 mark.thanks

Have a look at a side winder 8x32 56 20x 1/2 mill dot , at a 100 yards the target should be well visual,

You may get a second hand one for about that money

Do you really need to zoom right in?

 

I used 8x mag on my hmr and also 8x on my .22-250 especially at night when I need more light. I use a redfield 4-12x40 the only downfall with 12x max on the .22-250 is when zeroing past 150yards you struggle to see the little hole lol.

When i am zeroing at 100yds i cant see where the rounds are hitting.the quarry seens realy small at this distance . a freind says i need more zoom cheers

Personal preference really mate. I just don't feel the need to see the fleas on a rabbits head lol. Zeroing is a ball ache but maybe try some of the shoot and see targets

I struggled to see where my rounds hit paper with my .223 at 100 yards, Just got a cheap Hawke 3-9x50 on it. But it put a fox to sleep at 280 yards last week and holds zero, it has inspired confidence in me so ill continue to stick with it for now...

 

Dont think I would want much more mag than 8 9 or 10. Reason being is when that fox pops out 40 yards in front of you and you have a scope wound up to 20, you wont find foxy in the scope!

4-16x50 ns gameking on my hmr, just remember that even tho you may not use top mag its always best to have a little more than just enough magnification as the top mag on the scope is always finicky to keep the in view on target.

I use mine on full mag with no bother, What do you mean "finicky to keep the in view on target"?

With my dodgy eyes I was struggling with x9 at 100 yards so I put a 6-24 on my Hornet and have been using x18. It's very good for zeroing but I've found if I shoot and the quarry jumps or runs I loose sight of it so am going to try it at x12 for a wider field of view. A fox at 120 yards on x18 looks like a buffalo !

i'm the same in that i like loads of mag for daytime and back it off at night.you can do worse than an mtc 8x32x56 second hans clear clicks ok glass .when paper punching at 100 you can see those hnt holes nice and clear.and if a fox pops out at 40 yards add .5 of a second to turn the mag down and shoot it simples.

What I mean by my previous comment is that the top magnification is (struggling to put this into words) or needs less movement from you the shooter to unsteady the image and which your position on looking through the scope can be changed ever so slightly from your movement and the image displayed.

I have found this on a few models of varying brands and although this is more common with higher magnification scopes and does not prevent the job they do it does have a slight effect and not pose a huge problem, in effect my 3-12 works great but on 11 and 12 x mag it is not so easy to shoulder and have the image displayed so quickly without finding that certain spot on my cheek piece where I have the precise view on target.

So, what scope does this friend suggest?

 

Magnification and reticles get very personal, what works for me, you, your friend, may be very different.

 

What has not being able to see zeroing holes got to do with field work, try a spotting scope, £20-30 from Aldi.

 

My issues with the WTC are the reticle and the set parallax, which I seem to remember is about 100 yards, very good scopes for the money though! :thumbs:

Basicaly im new to shooting with a rifle i have only had it a few months . i was just wanting to know peoples opinions,looking at the posts some have diffrent thoughts on magnification.i was thinking it could improve things.my freind likes to shoot at x 14

I don't kown if it's relevant but I tried a couple of groups today, one at x12 mag. and one at x18. 1/2" bull. The shots to the left are probably my old eyes getting tired concentrating of the sight picture.
