Members Of Thl........something Else For Charity?

Recommended Posts

So I've been in discussion with this really decent mod about how we can liven things up in here (THL in general).

So far this is just an idea/suggestion and I suppose what I'm looking for is

A. How much support we can drum up

B. Some more suggestions as to how to go about this

C. Some more help to get this off the ground

D. Prize donations & a little help from anyone with any contacts (you'll see where this will be needed if you read on.

Before we go any further............ YES it will be for charity.

So far this is what we've got,

A monthly competition, in each sub forum,

1. Fox shooting
2. Stalking
3. Air rifle/plinkers
4. Catapults
5. Lurcher work
6. Bushing
7. Terrier work
8. Fishing
9. Ferreting
10. Longnetting

My apologies if I've missed any out ALL sections/members are welcome to participate.

So I'm thinking written stories/article of days out a minimum of 500 words and must contain a picture of some sort from the day in question. At the end of each month we hold a vote for best story in each section they then go head to head with each winner from each sub forum and the winner of that vote win a prize (if anyone will donate lol).

Each entry will be £5.00 with all proceeds going to charities.

At the end of April we take all the monthly winners and we hold a vote again, and this is where I'm looking for someone with a bit clout with contacts the said story gets published in a hunting related magazine?

Obviously it needs ironed out abit and I'm looking for as much help as I can get but I'm sure the THL community won't let me down.

Any suggestions/help/donations welcome.

Thanks Ross.

The same people will end up winning every month as some people can naturally write and others can't so no matter how fantastic a day out you have had if you can't put it down on paper legibly then you

Don't send them to DARCY they will be in a book next year ............

Keep the rules very relaxed and let everybody play to their strengths I say....   Some folks might be a crack with the camera and make it more of a illustrative story/article, some people might have

I like that idea mate, there's some decent bits written on here, I'm sure there would be donations etc forth coming when needed.

There's a few gems on here kev in all the sections tbh, if you think about it's just one prize per month, that's 3 lamps & two batteries ianb.....

I have to agree with socks, without being nasty, some of us find it hard to write a sentence yet alone a story. I think it would have limited appeal.

Once upon a time my rottie killed 20 men at the hippie protest then we went up the field caught 3 hares at once, then dug 50 badgers in the one stop. On our way home he caught 5 deer and an Ethiopian with a dinner ticket. And he was only getting warmed up

I think it's a great idea Ross.

Thing is, this post is to discuss how to make something like this work, rather than just say it won't.

Anything like this is always going to be hard to implement in the beginning, until we get some sort of routine going.

As for the write-ups. then they would need to be taken as a whole, rather than the writer's literary expertise. You have to remember this wouldn't be a literary prize, but a hunting related one.

Obviously a great 500 word write up about shooting one feral shouldn't win over a less well-worded one about a 50 rabbit night or whatever.

Give it some thought please lads. I'm sure it can work, but we need to dot the i's and cross the t's to make it so.

Please add any thoughts/ideas as and when you think of them.

Cheers.

Keep the rules very relaxed and let everybody play to their strengths I say....

Some folks might be a crack with the camera and make it more of a illustrative story/article, some people might have access to a rare or wide range of hunting opportunities that most don't and a simple piece about that is more interesting than literary genius about lamping rabbits.

Some folks might start thinking outside of the box and set themselves hunting challenges, a McNab (or imaginative variants), left and right woodcock, 410 challenges, culinary challenges where you hunt/gather everything for your meal.

There's more to this than literary talent folks. Play to your strengths....

If you can take into account people's writing style, i think it would encourage people to write a article . Let them know you don't have to be Hemingway and I can't see why it shouldn't work . I would enjoy reading some more stories about people's days out .

I completely understand that but how long will it be before we see the same good writers and picture takers topping the poles every month .... I will feel as though I am back in school again lol .......

One thing ive been impressed with this forum/ community since i first joined is the efforts made for charity. This seems like a good basis for another good cause, i agree with most of whats already been said. If it can be setup, so it works for everyone, i see no reason why it wont work.
