I've kept lurchers for close to forty years, none of em directly from Hancock, and most of those were shite too!

As a general comment, rather than one about a specific breeder I can't see a problem with farmers culling stock or those who have spare puppies from a home bred litter culling those excess to requirem

Anthony,.you original question was a wee bit naive,...   You ask to hear the opinions from lads who have owned and used dogs, that came via David Hancock,.but,.only if they have something nice to sa

Regarding worker to worker, over the years ive seen some decent first crosses, and 3/4 crosses.

These were all bred from leggy hill working Collies, that worked Sheep and Cattle, not any type of game.

And the Greyhound Bitches came from the local flapping track.

That's partly my point, there are plenty of very good 1st x's of ALL types bred from parents which have never seen any live game, never mind been worked!

ive just got my self a Hancock lurcher bitch puppy her sire is mr Joans, I know I wont be working her until next season but I am looking forward to training her as you only get out what you put in, I got a hancocks as I wanted a genuine collie cross not a hotch pocth one, she will be used for lamping, ferreting.

I must have a litter brother to your pup.good luck with her, I can't wait till next season. Let me know how she turns out.

im not saying non workers won't produce a good en. .but me thinks breeding worker to worker you increase your chances..I've had a dog from Hancock...a bad accident meant he never reached his potential...im not knocking his dogs,I like collie x..but to say worker to worker don't mean nothing? That's what I disagree with. .

That's not the case saying I WOULDNT have one cause I would my answer was like u said instinct being a first. And my first ever lurcher was from no background but stood out a lot I tryed it to see would it work knowing how his parents were and family pets, and yes It did, so swings round rounds

worker to worker. That cannot happen at the Hancock kennel. It used to be a chicken farm until Edwina Curry shut it down so farmer Hancock turned to farming dogs..Its that simple.

Worker to worker means feck all, apart from the fact that both parents were worked. It doesn't follow that all the pups will, or even be suitable for work. Plenty of working/coursing/racing champions etc in both dogs and horses, bred from parents which have never worked, coursed or raced prove it

If you just want a few rabbits and you just buy in all your dogs thats fine, but if you want the line to go on then you need to get the best rootstock from the beginning, not a quick fix from the lurcher supermarket (hancocks) Theres a dog on here owned by BIRD I think. Thats a proper collie/greyhound bred by a proper breeder who I think might be COLLIE JOHN but not sure. If I was looking for a Collie cross again, thats the type i would be after..
