Getting Started

Recommended Posts

Hello lads n lasses,

Just looking for some tips really please. Just got my first border terrier he's 13 month old n had him since 10 weeks. Im not from a hunting background but love being in the countryside n would love to give the pup a job to do. We have been spending time out in the woods n fields just mooching n he's enjoying poking into different holes etc. I would love to take him ratting but don't have the foggiest about getting started? Also just wondering in regards to "stock breaking" have I left it too late to train him? He is on the lead where sheep are but has now got very interested in them. Any ideas much appreciated!

Surely you can get your self started on rat's, or on some suitable farm in your area, or tips, river. The stock brokento sheep is iimportant, especially if your dog breaks loose. Rats, vermin should calm him down, and it know what is what. You could after that, have a light plastic pole and give it a crack when he pull for the sheep, and some wouldssay, put him in with a big ram, buti ddon't know about that. Some good terrier have it in them to start ignoring sheep, butbe careful

Thanks. My friend with stables has said I can take the dog down there to see if there's anything doing is it best to go at night with a lamp? I have heard the ram story too but I would worry about him getting doofed and internal injuries - a goat was nearly the end of my uncles terrier!
