sussex 5,777
Took the dog out this morning for a bit of training (Lab) she's 13 months , did all the usual stuff then let her have a run & play , my wife had her out the day before saying she had been in the river & really liked it , She had been in before a couple of months ago doing a bit of retrieving so I wasn't bothered when she went in ,she had a splash about , her swimming style needs polishing , but she was ok . I then throw a stick in ,sent her to retrieve it & the whole job went for a bag of shite!! She swam round in a small circle looking for it , obviously because it blended in colour wise & small she couldn't see it (this was entirely down to me ) she seemed to loose all momentum , next thing she is in trouble , struggling to keep her head up & swallowing water ...16st , wearing a fleece & wellies ,62years & a day old I'm in ..managed to grab her by the ear pulled her up & pushed her to the bank .I was bloody lucky she wasn't out far swimming back in wellies & fleece is like trying to swim with a cooker on yer back ...back on the bank she was fine , I was exhausted ..her trouble was my fault for throwing something she couldn't focus on & swim to .I wont be doing that again ....Does anyone know if iphones dry out . Born Hunter 17,787
Always surprises me how many Gundogs either struggle with swimming or flat out wont. I'm sure she'll come on though. ...and happy birthday.
socks 32,253
Perhaps she was just plain tired if the swim was at the end of a walk .... As for the iPhone put it in a bag of rice completely cover it and leave it there for two days ... The rice sucks out the moisture ........

It had only been a light training session socks , I have her for stalking more than anything else so it was more on control than retrieving , that's why I let her have a run & play when we are done ..I just think she lost momentum going round in a small circle , down to me throwing something she couldn't see ...will try the phone in the rice , thanks .. oneredtrim 148
If your Lab owns a nose on the end of it's muzzle then teach it how to turn it on, it will soon find a stick.

BIGLURKS 874
Mind and keep an eye on her my old man once had a dog die on him a day later after near drowning very similar dog even walked home after it eat it's dinner died the next day with something wrong for the mind of me I can't mind what it was something with water in the lungs or something just a heads up is all
Born Hunter 17,787
Biglurks, you might be talking about secondary drowning. The fluid builds up in the lungs and you literally drown slowly from Pulmonary Edema. I think it's usually from more serious drowning cases though.

When walking once with the pack, end pf the walk all are shhit up so be lines to the resevoir to bath them (this was Jan time) comes to her turn and she fuucks about refuses etc so I picks her up and put her in about 2foot from the edge. Remember this is a built resevoir so the sides are nearly 45degs. Anyway she fuckinn sank immediately that was me cold walking back to the cat
RubyTex 1,957
It's okay Sussex, even the more experienced swimmers can get into difficulty sometimes. I had to pull my dog out the sea earlier this year and it was an awful experience, and he's swam since an early age! He just got stuck similar to what you have described, round in circles wondering WTF to do. Then recently a lad up the coast went in after his Cocker....and they found his body the next morning on the next beach along. Sobering I can tell you!!
