Another Buck

Having been rained of most of the weekend , only managing a couple of hours Sat morning which blanked in as much as actually shooting anything , but did confirm the rut had kicked of , I packed the motor in the pouring rain in the hope it would stop before 4pm , the time I planned to get over to the same place I was at Sat morning to see if there was any action on the rutting stand .Deciding also to take the new dog with me for her first evening under the high seat , she has done a few mornings is steady enough but at 13months its a bit like asking a 7 year old to sit still & quite for 2 hours ..there has to be a 1st time & tonight was hers ...

The rain had turned to a drizzle but there were some blue patches so of we went , I was in the seat by 4.30 the dog tied up below .Less than 45mins later there were doe's at the bottom of the field 250mtr away , the dog would have been unable to see or scent them . With the doe's not moving far we waited , the first buck appeared about mid way down the field , in close to the hedge he started thrashing the bushes , standing on his hind legs to make sure he trashed the higher branches as well ..he stomped about , marking out his stand ,a mature buck , fish tailed head with no palmation if he come clear he would be a candidate ..it seemed all he wanted to do was trash as much vegetation as he could ..time for a little rattling , two antlers rattled together got his attention , another rattle had him trot up the field , 50 m from the seat (with dog sitting perfectly still) he stopped to see were the challengers were , he dropped on the spot ..I sat & watched him & the dog , neither moved .The buck because he couldn't the dog because she wasn't allowed...

 

An old mature buck , he was hoisted up for gralloching , then lowered onto the new Quad (the old one had been on the firm 10 years),back home he was washed out & put in the coldroom with a tag marked 157lb ,

 

Best bit of the night was the dog , really pleased , she sat still when the buck came close , never moved to the shot & was keen to find it when put on her tracking lead ..Plus she really liked the kidneys

That's a lovely buck. Might not have the desired palmate antlers but they're a rich tone.

BH , I took him because he never had the palmation ,there aren't many really good bucks about so any I do see get left ..besides they all taste the same

Yeah, I understood that mate. lol. I was just commenting that although he was culled because his head gear showed he wasn't a prime animal, imo his head gear is still pleasing aesthetically. But I have a mild obsession with antlers and hides. LOL
