J Darcy 5,871
Socks, in your 'snare' set-up, it looks like Mr Squirrel would be able to reach the other branches enough to bite his way through the wire. how have you been finding it? Quote Link to post

StephenWalsh 73
Make yourself a ply box with just enough clearance over the top of a Mk 4, put a hole in each end and sprinkle liberally with nuts. Job done. 5 Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
Socks I believe that kania set-up is not legal. There has to be a 'tunnel' leading into it to avoid non-target species. Just saying. I couldn't take a picture showing the squirrel caught with the tunnel in place as it's made of drain pile so removed it for the picture ........ 1 Quote Link to post

The pegs holding the snare are very lightly set so once the snare closes the squirrel falls ... There is enough wire to hang the squirrel below the branch ... I have never had a chewed wire on this set ....... Quote Link to post

The pegs holding the name are very lightly set so once the snare closes the squirrel falls ... There is enough wire to hang the squirrel below the branch so it's all good ... I have never had a chewed wire on this set ....... I would have thought the squirrel would have just grabbed hold of the branches below the snare 'pole'.....in fact, the 'pole' itself looks a bit too wide. You must surely suffer from knocked snares??? I use a much narrower pole and funnel the squirrel into the middle of that with wire.....even then, there's still knocked wires..... Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
The pole itself is only 3 inches wide ... You can see the 4 inch drainpipe hanging over it ... There are three snares either side all set slightly different so one of them will catch the squirrel ... As I said there is enough wire to drop the squirrel below any of the branches ...... J Darcy 5,871
So, you're saying the squirrel doesn't grab hold of the branches, instead it jumps straight down? It's remarkable because in practically all the instances I've filmed squirrel snaring, if theres any branches at all below the pole the squirrels will grab onto these. Then they can chew through the snare. How come the squirrels on your pole don't grab those lower branches? I'm intrigued... Quote Link to post

Squirrel sticks head in snare ... panics ... jumps skits dances whatever you want to call it ... Falls off pole ...the wire he is snared with is longer than the branch below him so he is hanging below any branches so,he can't grab any ... It's quite simple really ... Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
This is one of mine....way before I got the set-up nailed on. It was a bit of a proto-type, but nowhere near the finished article...still, it caught. but it didn't catch good enough. The next set up really nailed 'em. Simple and very very effective. 1 Quote Link to post
Mr Muddy 141
How high off the branch are you setting these snares? Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
Kania is probably the best option for someone with little knowledge of traps and trapping IMO! Eddie, in my opinion its the safest when used with a purchased cage/tunnel when there is a small risk of interference from the general public, eg a foot path close to where the traps are. Due dilegence springs to mind 1 Quote Link to post
