unlacedgecko 1,466
Exactly the same as with the foot and mouth outbreak. The army just have the inherent ability to sort shit out and adapt while civy outfits are running about headless. For that reason if we lack a dedicated unit for a given crises, governments often go running to the military. It ain't right or fair and in the absence of a dedicated outfit to deal with this the UN or whoever really needs to short something. I haven't seen the news, so don't know which units are going, but RAF Regiment and 2RTR used to be trained in CBRN warfare. That's who I would reach for. Grave digging was a Pioneer task, but then the government disbanded the whole Regiment about 4 weeks ago...
Born Hunter 17,817
Got a mate that's a SNCO (I believe) in the RAF regiment. I'll ask him this weekend UG. If regiment gunners have been sent out there on fleet protection type stuff he's likely to know a bit.

RemyBolt 420
For me, I see it as being a potentially wise, but doubly dangerous course of action. The basic principle has to be "We need to go over there and stop this before it comes over to us." Which makes sense. Instead of let other people deal with it, send over what we can to contain, control, and eliminate the threat. As harsh as this sounds, the only way to make sure the disease does not come back over here, let the troops stay over there for 2 months after the disease has been eradicated. It's the only way to make sure they're safe to bring home. Once the situation has been resolved and the threat of ebola is cleared, the troops would need to be kept in isolation/containment for 2 months. This would allow for double the incubation period of the disease. Once that has been done, they would be sent back on a plane that was brought over and sent straight back out. Pilots from the UK, never to leave the plane once it lands in Sierra Leone, and NOBODY to come onto the plane. Just refuel, pick up the troops (after their 2 month 'safe period' and fly back to the UK. Once in the UK, ALL (including the pilot) quarantined for another month. Is that taking things too far? Urm....nope! I'd rather be STUPIDLY cautious than plain stupid. 3 months of quarantine for 700 troops, or 1 UK based outbreak of ebola......I'd support the 3 months quarantine. It would suck for the troops, but that is the price of national security. If we did not send over troops, the odds of the disease spreading would be massive. If the wrong people took charge (see the example of the Spanish nurse) then we would be looking at a definite Western Catastrophe. However, doing what we can, while we can, and while it's potentially still manageable....it's the only real option. Think of it like finding a cancerous lump on your arm. You need to take action and remove the disease before it spreads and does more damage. The cost might be your arm, a big price to pay, but if the disease if left...you'd give anything to turn back time and lose that arm! I wish all the best to the troops going over there. I pray as many are able to safely return (after quarantine time). If the operation proves successful, it could potentially save more lives than imaginable. Think of the damage the Black Death dealt out. Now consider this as the opportunity to stop a repeat performance from another disease. For me, I think it's horrific, it's ridiculous, it could potentially the biggest mistake made by a first world country (if it brings ebola to the UK). At the same time, I think it's the only real option we have...contain, control, eliminate. If we leave it, we'll wish we could turn back time. The cost of action will be big, but the cost of inaction could be astronomical.

RemyBolt 420
For any avid readers, I'd recommend a book called The Hot Zone, by Richard....something or other. Written years ago. It was a fascinating read, horribly written, but still 100% worth reading. It's basically the history of ebola, and it's bloody scary!!!
NELS0N 457
what about dealing with the hundreds of illegal immigrants flooding into the country daily, they're a huge threat to keeping this contained. Our troops dont get paid enough to deal with something like this IMO
