Feed Or Not Feed

I miss once in a while, once a week sounds too much. I think a bit of starvation is good for all of us. I do occasionally have a day off myself. The main reason I miss with the dogs is to replicate nature. In the wild dogs regularly go without food often for days. I would not run them hard if I missed a day though.

What a load of pish..for the sake of 30 bob id rather put my buddy a pan of scran down..work em hard and treat em like heroes not starve em once a week because of some old wives tale!!

Zoos ect give there animals starve days,From my days with exotics lions,tigers would get 15lb of meat on the bone 5 days a week,wolves 5lb a day 5 days a week.

Its just to replicate the fact in the wild they wouldn't always get food every day,meant to be good for stomach to get a rest(CLEAN OUT),also in zoos ect keeps animals looking fit and healthy you go to some zoos and see lions ect that are obese.

I dont give my dogs a starve day but i do vary amounts so today they might get a little but tomorrow get a good meal,stops them getting pickie .

If I fed my dogs at lunchtime on a Sunday let's say,starved em Monday and wanted to go lamping Tuesday night and not feed until returning and run 70/80 bunnies whilst out I don't care what dog you have or how its bred it WILL NOT perform ...if your grafting them seriously hard you CANNOT miss a feed infact quite the opposite..I feed mine in an afternoon as it takes 8-9 hours to digest their food,lamp them,feed on return,then feed again in the afternoon and they are fuelled to go again the following night..so my dogs will get five pans of scran in 48 hours if lamped two consecutive nights..you live & learn in this game so just do what you think is right for your mutt..if it don't work then change it :-)

All I can tell you is I worked in greyhound kennels for years had 60 to 70 dogs owner had some great dogs derby finalists we never fed on a sunday done them dogs no harm at all

If you knew you were going lamping you wouldnt probably starve the day before,But at the same time how many miles would a hound do on a hunting day having no food the day before?

You shouldnt need to feed a dog 8 hours before going lamping unless your feeding bad food in my opinion.

If a dog is well feed it should be well able to cope with a starve day,And its probably good for it.

Your dogs do what suits you and your dogs,But remember you cannot beat nature,Its been tested alot more than the stuff you see on internet

If dogs are fed correctly they will never get over weight(like zoo animals, with no exercise), I normally feed mostly chicken in the summer and mostly beef, that is % beef and 20% fat.

 

You can not compare a wild animals diet(wolf) with a working dog, a working dog will catch a weeks worth of food in one night, where as a wolf will only try to kill when hungry/needs food.

Lol you could argue a wolf doesn't get wormed every 3 months,doesn't get driven to a place where there lots to catch,doesn't get the benefit of a 2million cp lamp,dosnt get to go home to a warm kennel with heat lamps supplements blah blah.

But thats all of topic really,A dogs stomach has to work as hard as any other animal to digest meat,So it probably more relevant than a lot of things the TOP DOGMEN say is essential,But becouse WE wouldnt like it we think a dog wouldnt either.

Like the feed the dog before lamping because i don't like working when im hungry ,a dog aint human .

I often eat once a day and graft as well as the next its what im used too,Some one that eats four meals a day would feel faint by 10 .

My dogs eat once a day if i lamp tonight they wont have been fed for 24 hours by the time were out makes no odds infact if i tried feeding them before hand it would effect them because they aint used to it.

You might not like it or agree with it but its all true You came on with your starve the dog to save a few pence narrow minded my way or no way.

I have to admit everytime I've seen a dog,,get a hypo on the lamp...it's been the ones that haven't been fed for 24 hours,,,and that includes two of my own when I was younger,,,and fed in that way

 

Never seen it happen to one fed early that day.....

 

Of course these dogs that I've seen have a hypo have been on nights after big chalks,,,,if your just after a handful ,,then it won't make much difference
