Read that the coppers are testing to see if it's an APBT. I take Shepp & Gnasher's points...bulls are bred to dish it out, and as such are more dangerous than most, although other breeds such as Rotties have killed kids in the past.., and there was a mal earlier this year.

Baby was apparently being looked after by a relative who was also bitten in the attack. When will people learn.

Yes the pit bull terriers are no doubting dangerous dogs being so fast and powerful for relatively small dogs. . That tendency to 'snap' would be more owed to the terrier ancestry than the bull, the British bull dog is far more placid than the jack russel for example.

 

My father was a friend to Maurice Dann of Plymouth, I often had the privilege of roaming around his court yards with his boys when I was 11/12, I became fascinated with the temperament of these infamous dogs. . I knew what they were bred and used for and expected to be met the rails with fearsome vibes, instead they were steady and affectionate dogs, one of them, a retired bitch from what I can remember, she even lived indoors with the family. The ownership or lack of to these dogs make a monumental difference. It not an absolute rule, there are exceptions, but I would stick with - generally bad come from bad owners.

 

I have absolute trust in my two long dogs. . Both are big, strong and regularly worked, my old hag of a mother-in-law is always saying "keep them away from my grandson" I don't take too kindly to people informing me of what to do with my dogs and child, so the other day, I was sat in the garden with my boy on knee, mother-in-law present, I called my dogs from around the back, they both came and greeted by sniffing and lapping at the boy. Mother-in-law "oh, they like him? Ah yes. But would leave them alone with him? Absolutely not - why would anyone do that.

tragic!!,ive had dogs for near on 50 years , and would never leave a child alone with a dog of any breed ever !,i have a young grandson now ,and two sals ,i watch them like a hawk ,do i trust them do i fk..idont think they would , but could never take the risk of leaving them alone it only takes a second for something bad to happen , littlechildren sqeeling and playing dogs head up and looking !!. i have heard folk say; i trust my dogs 100% with kids ,they are fools imo.

Make it mandatory insurance on all bull mollasser types

 

Make every litter of staffs bull dogs mastiffs etc a thousand pound levvee after birth to help pay for registrations etc

 

No registrations? No insurance? No licence ?

Make it financially impossible to own a dog of this type, it may seem drastic but iny eyes all the Staffords In the uk aren't worth a child's empty bedroom

To add, I don't believe the bull type dog is anymore dangerous in temperament than most any other breed, I think they just attract the wrong owners and consequently become boisterous in nature. No bad dogs for me, just bad owners.

Agree about the bad owners bit but got to disagree about bull breads, many deaths and serious attacks caused by dogs are by bull breeds, this isn't sensationalism this is unfortunately a fact. There is a section of our society that use them as a social status and until this is controlled or stopped I'm afraid these incidents will continue.

Media fuel their own fire by writing bullshit about em to attract the idiotic owners then when it happens they say look we told you so. It's not always the typical stereotype owner either. Have seen plenty of blokes well into their 40s with bull breeds being used as an ego boost. A man aggressive bull breed goes against the very nature of the breed. Rip to the baby.

when you have tv companies airing bullbreeds twatty owners spitting, lettimg the dog shite in public and walk on with young idiots then its a downward road we are heading,, theres a few drugs around in that round my pal said so the picture is becoming clear, for me a £ 1000 for insurance is too much yes it will stop the young junkies out of it but it would also punish some good owners like myself who hasnt done a thing wrong, as said before id like to see more input from dog wardens out and about wuth a pen and paper, intel then use it.

The thousand pound should be a tax on the breeding of them so to speak from the source, the breeders

 

Staffs go for 450 - 500 round here and there are litters of them all the time

 

Why should breeders of dogs line their pockets for the rescue centres to pick up the bill?

I had one of my kelpie bitches put down last year.

 

She wasn't a bad dog and I don't think of myself as a bad owner...it was simply a case of bad timing. She was nearly ten and had always been a one man dog but her attachment to me intensified when I had children. If I'd been living on my tod, miles from anyone then she may have been fine, but she was living in the south east in a family home. I loved her a lot...but not as much as I love my kids.

Almost all of these attacks seem to happen inside a house so I'm not sure if I've got it wrong here but , if you are going to keep types of dogs that are known to be manny ,keep them in runs were they are a danger to nobody. Remove the dog from the house and remove the problem. There is always an exception to the norm and dog attacks have happened away from the home but in the majority of cases the attacks happen in the home ! Known manny dogs of any breeding should not be kept in homes especially were vulnerable children also reside. What idiot keeps dogs like these running free in a house .
