Popular Post johnny boy68 11,726
As a few are aware we ran another Charity fishing match again this year and I sent a write up about the weekend to some fieldsports/fishing magazines. For those of you who are interested or don't read the magazines heres the write up. Casting for Charity. On the weekend of the sixteenth and seventeenth of August, twenty five fishermen descended upon Trefaldu fishery at Dingestow near Monmouth. They came from all corners of mainland Britain, from the Scottish Highlands, to the Cornish coast. They travelled to Wales for a fishing competition, but one a little unusual, the second annual 'Craigy Boy Cup'. Originally in the memory of Craig Stevens 42 from Tyldesley in Wigan, who sadly passed away in 2012. Craig 'craigyboy' Stevens. The competition was organised by a group of likeminded members of 'The Hunting Life', an online hunting, shooting and fishing, discussion forum. These members had never met each other, or Craig, but felt, as part of an online community, they could come together to do something positive in Craig's memory. The first year was a resounding success, with the competition held on the river Trent, and raising a total of £1000 for Macmillan Nurses. The overall match winner was Owain Rees from Merthyr Tydfil, which meant that the competition was to be held in Wales in it's second year. With the Craigy Boy Cup going to Mick Corbett with a Bream of 7lb 1 oz.This years competition built on the success of the first, and was held at the picturesque Trefaldu fishery, where competitors also camped. Over the weekend, those who had met at the previous year were reaquainted and the new faces were eagerly welcomed by all. The Sunday dawned bright and sunny and competition day began in earnest, at 9am sharp, with the sound of a hunting horn echoing around the pools. The day saw plenty of action, mostl;y from the smaller fish, but with some good sized common carp also being taken. It was a close run thing, with the leader board changing numerous times throughout the day. When the final horn sounded, the weigh in began in earnest, and despite numerous contenders for the top spot, it was Simon Archer from Leicester that emerged triumphant with the winning weight of 21lb 5oz. He walked away a happy man, with the addition of a match reel kindly donated by Exeter Angling Centre. Dave Walsh was runner up with 20lb 3oz and recieved a landing net again donated by Exeter Angling Centre and various bags of groundbait donated by TK Tackle of Calne. The "Craigy Boy Cup" was won by Owain Rees with a common carp of 9lb 8oz. The maggots for the match were kindly donated by Celtic Baits. Following the competition, anglers feasted on a delicious BBQ, which included much home grown produce and some very tasty sausages provided by Gardners Butchers of Ludgershall. An auction and raffle were also held, with many prizes kindly donated by local shops and buisnesses, including Exeter Angling Centre, TK Tackle of Calne, Greens Tackle, MPK Steelwork and Cladding, Western Power and Wiltshire Tackle and Guns of Swindon. All in all a fantastic weekend was had, with a total of £1407.50 raised for the 'Make a Wish Foundation UK'. Many thanks once again to Roger Bennett and family at Trefaldu fishery for providing the excellent location and facilities and to everybody for all of their hard work in making the event a success. Heres to next year, may the 'Craigy Boy Cup' continue to grow from strength to strength. Simon Archer match winner. Owain Rees Craigyboy Cup winner. Dave "dytkos" wooden spoon winner.
