Alright Chris.   We've all been there mate.   You think that's bad....you've clearly not ready any of my rabbit shooting posts. I had a big fat zero for 3 or 4 session in a row. The trick with rab

This is the first field I have to work on mate. When I went years ago with my mate and his dad you didn't even have to get out the car they would just be roaming around. Apart from runs in the long gr

It happens to use all at some point mate .keep cracking on things will soon come together mate

Doubt there be oat on that land mate, apart from shrooms :D

Are there any runs anywhere? Grass that long will form a tunnel like shape as rabbits consistently run along the same lines.

Bread for pigeons and veg for the rabbits.... Ha. My god, there's something about you Chris that makes me smile.

I was desperate to see if anything would come out or at least take it over the day.

What makes you come to the conclusion there's nothing on the land mate?

Something just doesn't look right. It's almost waste land. It's rather open with no cover. Hardly a bloody tree in sight. I notice a house or two in the distance which suggests it's close to a built up area with noise. Rabbits kinda like soft sandy soil that's easy to burrow. You could check along the hedgerows perhaps. Pigeons won't be drawn to that land in my opinion... After all whats there for them?

You'll no doubt post a 7 rabbit bag and a brace of birds in your next post... I hope you bloody do :)

Cows will be on it in a few weeks mate. That's what the field is for. No I can't go in the woods but the fence is right at those trees.

Lol no 7 rabbit bags mate... well not until those rabbits I put from pets at home start breeding anyway hahaha ;)

Interesting. Looking at the pics 2 of them give me hope. The first and the last.

If you look at the second, third and forth pictures, that says to me...open field. It's rare that you'll find rabbits in the middle of an open area. Even though there is a fence running along the pics, there is absolutely no cover for rabbits to hide. Imagine if you were a rabbit. Would you go out into the open, along a manmade structure (the fence) without any good cover from birds of prey, or people, just to eat some grass that you can get from just outside the burrow entrance?

With the first picture, what is on the other side of the hedge?

The reason the last pic gives me hope, IF you're going to get pigeons, they'll land there when the grass is how it is. But it'll take a while for them to be used to that land. Looks like reclaimed land, not quite 'proper' fields, but being held in place ready to be developed in a few years time.

The grass is way too high for pigeons to land, so any bread you've put out, unless the pigeons have a clear landing spot, they'll not go down, even for food.

Even though you don't have permission to shoot the woods, how far down does the field go in comparison to the woods? I wouldn't be surprised if you had a lot of pigeons or rooks/crows in those woods.

But remember only to shoot them if the situation falls within the bounds of the General License. The last thing you want is to break the GL guidelines that close to people's houses.

The field goes right to those woods mate. Only barbed wire splitting it apart. No houses that way for miles but the forestry have all that land.

So do you think the land is useless mate? I'm waiting for the grass to be cut down abit then as you say pigeons might land.

It's certainly not useless! You have a permission, and that's well worth having, even if there is little to no quarry. You get to practice a lot of skills, distance estimating, shooting (you can always set up a few targets to shoot at), concealment, hide making, and things like that.

At the moment I'd be more inclined to check the area nearer to the woods. You can't shoot in the woods, but there could well be rabbits in the woods that come into the field to eat. I have that down one permission where I can even shoot in the woods. It's actually easier to lay out near the woods and shoot the rabbits that come out into the field.

The first picture you took, what's behind those hedges?

Chris, what's behind the bushes on the first picture?

Next time you're down by the woods, get a picture facing the woods from a little way back and get a picture looking along the boarder of the woods. I'll see if I can pop down a permission later and get some pics of what to look for.

Actually I will just walk the dogs with my wife and get some pics for you.

Nothing mate just another field behind the bush but the wire fence runs through it if I remember right. Ill send you some more pics mate, I think I'm going over Monday to have some target practice. Our new game is we have ten pellets and gotta shoot as many of the berries off the tree that we can :). I'm not to bad at it actually, I can shoot them better than I hit the middle of a paper target for some reason lol

Laptop wasn't letting me upload these pics yesterday.

If you look along this hedge you can't really see much. The super trained eye will probably recognise a few beats here and there. But for 95% of people, it's just a hedge.

Take a few steps back from the path and look as if you're only a few feet high (crouch down): you'll see things like this:

This is where the rabbits have made a tunnel through the foliage. You can see how active/used a tunnel is by checking out the growth of the plants around it and figuring the age of the plants making the tunnel.
