lurcher and fox

Recommended Posts

All depends, if I have a young dog they will be out alot with the terriers and the enevitable will happen and they will see foxes etc sometimes younger than 12 months, obviously not often or on their own but it gives them a taste for it :D If you can give him one or two doubled up around 14 months and after that run him on his own :) Although my mate has a well bred 3/4 grey 1/4 bull 15 months old and yesterday when my dog caught one he didnt want to know and showed no interest so not every dog will show an interest at that age :D

i agree with that mate... tho some breeds of lurcher dont show interest until there close to 2 years... you will get alot of yearlings in the local ads paper because the lurcher at 12months was still busy being a pup and the owners are uneducated...

i have just invested in a new dog.saluki xdeerhoundxgrey he comes from good working perrents who both take fox.i have no intention of running him yet as he is a puppy but at what age would you run a dog on fox

YOU WILL KNOW BY THE DOG BUT I USUALLY START ON FOX ABOUT 18 MONTHS

early to start....early to quit.......a young dog might show willing , but its still just that...young. the day after if its endured any trauma , it will often have a lasting effect....pups are best left being pups and i echo the opinions of you know when your own dog is ready....not to be confused when your ready mind ;)

if its on its own over a year but if its with a few tough dogs from 6 months even younger seems fine to me this is just my opinion but the first few time hope the dog dosent get biten hard (run with a few dogs) till its fully physicaly developed but the more a dog gets bitten the smarter it gets it learns to go hard and kill fast also where to get a hold of the fox another advantage of running witha few dogs it'll watch and learn it'll ethier be good and have it in it or it want ethier way you'll no early but dont expect much from a young dog as long as theres a slow staedy improvment and if it dose get kaned hard on one of its first then when its young and is reluctant to go in on another give it time and eventaully even if it takes a few months if its good itll start going in hard agian and you'll have a good dog

:) sorry to disagree there bud but not only is 6 months very young but to start it off with a number of dogs doesnt really teach it anything IMO... when i'm bringing mine on i like to try and teach it to be single handed... shot foxes on the lamp is a good start and i also like to try and teach the dog to grip the neck and chest of the fox by holding it up by the back legs... thats the way i bring mine on anyway... and it seems to work even with dogs that are'nt hard enough to recieve a bite from fox... i still usually end up with a dog that can take one or 2 when need be ;)
