RemyBolt 420
I'm just learning about snaring and working with traps. As everyone knows I'm the crappest ratter on the forum, and about 95% of my hunting pellets are going towards rat heads. As if by magic, searching the newer areas has given rise to new members. This has gotten me wondering, how many people use multiple hunting systems? Multiple techniques as in 2 or more...stuff like snaring, ferreting, trapping, shooting, coursing, terriers, and things like that? Or do people generally just stick the the one discipline? johnny boy68 11,726
If you mean when I go ferreting I take a dog and nets then yes and I reckon most hunters do on here. Why do you use words most can't understand, I had to google holistic I thought it was some religous crap.

Why do you use words most can't understand, I had to google holistic I thought it was some religous crap. Sorry mate. I meant all encompassing. I think my example of ferreting may have been a bad one, as that involves dogs for the runners that get away. I meant things like shooter's, do they bother going our with just the dogs for coursing? Does anyone into ferreting ever leave the ferret at home and set traps? Do any snare-guys pick up an air rifle and go out with that? Do any falconry people go out with traps? More like that kind of thing. It's just because I'm trying a new style of hunting to make myself a better overall hunter. I want to learn ferreting after a while and all kinds of other things, but one thing at a time. So I'm just wondering whether there are many other hunters that use multiple methods to catch their quarry, e.g. guns and traps. I understand that with some techniques it wouldn't really be wise to do them at the same time, e.g. ratting with a terrier and a gun! Or trying to course for rabbits while there are snares all about. But there are some methods that can be used together.

I also snare and trap rats in fenns and cage traps too.

Tiercel 6,986
Slowed down now (It's an age thing) but used to shoot, wildfowling, pigeon shooting, roost and decoys, walked up and flighting woodcock and the odd beaters day driven. Ferreting, ran lurchers on the lamp, had hawks for a few years, long netting. Never tried snaring or trapping apart from rats, never really appealed to me. That said, I did buy some snares, and set them out one evening and as I was getting back to the car, a van load of gypsies turned up so I went back pulled the snares stuck them back in the shed and thats where they have stayed that was about 5 years ago. To earn a wage in this game you have to be multi skilled ... I ferret ... Lamp ... Snare ... Trap ... Shoot .. Longnet ... About the only thing I don't do,is fly birds of prey and that's because there isn't a massive need for it in pest control ... On the odd occasion I need to use one I have a few mates with Harris hawks goss's etc ........
