taylorld 2
Hey guys, I signed up to this forum after seeing Si Pittaway's video's on YouTube. I am going to be buying a new PCP rifle and I can't decide which is best for me. I am split between the BSA Ultra and the BSA Scorpion. On the BSA website the Scorpion advertises a higher velocity, does this mean anything really? I would love the .25 version however it doesn't seem like people use them at all and there are no video's online comparing .177, .22 or .25? My brother just got the HW97KT and it's nice, however a little heavy for me and I wanted a semi auto. Any help appreciated, thanks guys! Lee Quote Link to post

taylorld 2
Hello, money isn't really a problem. I would spend the extra to get something that will perform and last for a long time. I'm not totally new to air guns but they've moved on so much since I was shooting them 8 - 10 years ago. I would probally spend up to 1K on a gun with a scope. I love the tatical finish BSA offer and the lightness of both rifles. Anyway, do you have a top ten list of rifles? Money no object? Thank you : ) Lee Quote Link to post
4sight 31
Hi Lee, welcome. I would recommend you pop over to your local air rifle club and have a chat with the guys there. You need to hold and shoot a range of kit to see what suits you, there is nothing worse than finding you have bought the wrong rifle. I have no experience with the rifles you are considering, but you won't go wrong looking at an Air Arms S400 or S510 + recharging bottle. I now only buy second hand as I have the confidence to repair the kit myself and I'm not stuck with anti tamper which stops you stripping the rifle for servicing and adjusting the power. Good luck with your final choice. All the best. Dave 1 Quote Link to post
toby63 1,236
bsa ultra or scorpion are good rifle as well as hw100 or try pick up a rapid Quote Link to post
taylorld 2
I appreciate your replies. The rifle will be for target practice. I think rabbits are too cute to kill lol - I think the .177 is the way to go, I just thought a .25 would be cool at putting large holes in targets. I'm popping down to a range tomorrow to have a blast on a few. Quote Link to post

Like properly mint. Just put on the ambi beech stock but also have the tactical stock as well which I found too light. Edited September 29, 2014 by Rez Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
Taylord, you've had some good advice so far and really its down to personal preference, I'm a big guy and light guns don't suit me, I shot a bsa mercury for 35 yrs, I enjoyed my 22 rapid mk1 which I sold last year because of magazine issues, I bought a bsa ultra multishot which was to short and light for me, traded that in and bought a daystate huntsmen classic in 177 which was decent enough but a bit noisey with a shrouded barrel and no silencer, I used that for a month and it was losing air so put it in and bought a hw 100 in 177, I had a choice of 5 guns and opted for the full length version without the thumbhole, it felt dead right from the second I put it up to my shoulder and as a full time pest controller its used everyday, very rare to miss a shot unless I mess up, its easily the best gun I've ever shot and is a lot better than all the others I'd tried as well, its impossible to double load and with 2 x 14 shots magazines suits me fine, the only drawback is its heavy to some, I find the weight keeps me steady, take your time and try every type you can, atb, WM 2 Quote Link to post
villaman 9,983
The ultra will match any top price gun pellet for pellet specially if its regged, but if money is not a problem then HW100 kt or ks ,far better build quality, 14 shoot mag, best cocking out of all PCPs , comes with two mags , comes with silencer the best one on the market and that's why I have two of them one in .22and the other .177 Doesn't matter what cal as long as you know your set up ,gun ,pellet ,scope and what you are capable of 2 Quote Link to post
mark williams 7,558
Mate - Wirrall Countryman and VM are spot on with their advice but to add a little i find the weight of my HW 100 KT .177 with a set of shooting sticks absolutely lethal for accuracy, and accuracy is everything in air rifles. The trajectory of .177 when hide shooting gives you accuracy 2nd to none. I also shoot both .177 cal and .22 cal with the 100`s - through branches and alike - .177 every time and also night shooting. Typical open ground like this last weekend i used my HW 100 KS .22 with a man made hide in the hedges over ploughing for decoyed crows (flocked) and battered them - 22 on the Saturday, 14 on Sunday. I was zeroed at 28 yds precisely and drilled them at 35 yds on average with just 1 milldot hold over in most shots. You will find a range finder a must with .22 cal. I could not recommend HW 100 enough in my humble opinion for air rifle hunting. atb 2 Quote Link to post

Thank you : ) Lee Lee, Go to WH Smith, there is an excellent magazine out at the moment, "The sporting Airgun handbook". They list every damn air rifle going and have reviews on the top 60-70. It also has a top 10 for springers, target shooting, hunting. It lists all the makers and all the rifles each maker produces. Daz39 962
If you are looking at PROPPER target shooting, they also have those, but you are looking £2-3K for these beasts! Quote Link to post
taylorld 2
Wow thanks guys, what a great forum! Thank you all for not mocking me because I'm a newbie I'll have a deep think about everything you've said. Interestingly, nobody can say a bad word about the HW100. Quote Link to post

Thank you all for not mocking me because I'm a newbie I'll have a deep think about everything you've said. Interestingly, nobody can say a bad word about the HW100. I thought I'd refrain from mentioning I had one too.....and just let you see the top 10 anyhow! The 100 full length will give you more shots per fill than pretty much any other PCP with the factory bottle on. 120+ in .177 Its something to think about though, if you are target shooting, I wouldn't go something like an Ultra as you will need to fill every 40 shots or so. If it is just targets, you will find PCP will be TOO EASY and you will get sick of filling it. If all you want to do is shoot targets, get a springer, more of a challenge and you will improve your shooting no end! If not, a PCP with a very high shot count would be my choice. Quote Link to post
RedRob 1
I have a BSA Ultra SE .177, fantastic little gun for pest control, easy to carry, and accurate, but shot count is low, for HFT etc, you would have to get it regulated, for the money, you would be hard pressed to get better.
