First Ducks Of The Season.

Recommended Posts

A bit early for us but we decided to have a day at the pond on our small perm up Alston way and I have never seen so many ducks.

When we arrived at the field next to the pond approximately 250 to 300 duck lifted off the water, no shots fired we hurried to put the hide up and settled in to wait for some to return.

Within a minute or two several flocks of mallard returned, probably most of what had just taken off and that was only the beginning. We dropped three ducks from four shots and then a site I have never seen in the 6 years or so we have been on this perm, flock after flock of mallard flying down from the direction of the neighbouring farm.

We tried counting them in blocks of fifty or so but there were just too many coming too damn quick, we were so gobsmacked we nearly forgot what we were there for and believe me it's hard picking out targets when so many birds are in front of you.

The noise from their wings and all the quacking was astounding I was happy just watching the whole event unfold, there must be some good flight ponds up on that farm.

A couple more shots each and time to reload and shoot again then they were off, wish I had taken the dvd camera. They kept on flighting in every half hour or so until about lunchtime before it went quiet.

We had a good morning and I am sure there are more accomplished wildfowlers and shooters on here that would have bagged far more birds yesterday than we managed but I am not the best with a shotgun.

29 mallard for the morning is a real red-letter day for me and my mate and one we won't forget, photos of end of day will follow when I find how to upload from camera to I-pad.

P.s. My spaniel made some excellent retrieves from land and water and he's a wee bit stiff today.
