dogmad riley 1,343
what did people yous before lurchers? greyhounds they catch most if not all quarry if they don't kill themselves hiting something lol his bitch was a1 open racer before I got her excellent deer bitch I think they make excellent point and slip dogs but for the brains there isn't much but this is just my experience. They will give 100% on every slip Quote Link to post
MickC 1,825
Some ex track dogs Ive seen over the years were class Fox dogs back in the day of course,no brains but they could put Foxes away for fun . Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
Ive tried a couple of times to enter ex track dogs to the field and hunting,in reality they may not be as mentally restricted as some Bull and Saluki hybrids, ive seen them muller a fox and screw an hare in fashionable style, yet I got fed up of throwing them over the shoulder when their severe lack of stamina found them out, especially when it was a few miles over fence, wall and Dale. They are a piss poor lurcher substitute. gamerooster 1,179
Get a marathon.dog, or atleast a six bender Quote Link to post
Dales Hunter 22
I'm not for a second suggesting that he's a substitute for a lurcher, more trying to teach what I've got to do a lurchers job in some kind of fashion. Thank you for all your thoughts thus far. I'm realising that stock breaking and ferret breaking is our first task, aswell as recall, but can anyone suggest how? Quote Link to post
Bull&Ferret 12
Whatever the outcome, I think most lads on here will agree it's great that your giving the dog a chance to keep on working for you in another line. I love greyhounds. So I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted. 4 Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
They are easy enough to stock train, back to basics really, they take some effort to get them jumping with confidence, they have plenty of determination and drive. Its a case of taking them back to basic tuition, plenty of short sharp lessons. 1 Quote Link to post
slip lead 862
Be very very careful were you run the dog. They have tunnel vision, when on the arse of something, and many end up with a snapped neck, on the far side of a ditch or dyke. Your will also need all your exspiriance keeping them massive back legs just right, because he will find doing six or seven races, in a day or night, very demanding on his body, as all is done with 100% drive and commitment, were as Before he retired that would of been over about 3 weeks. francolin 449
some ex track dogs are prone to crashing in to every thing possible, be very aware of the fact it could get injured , more so than a dog raised from a pup in the hunting game,i know of 2 that have ended bad,one the first time out on rabbits ,but you know your dog ,I would defo only try daytime running see how that goes good luck. spartacus 22
Best of luck pal I know of someone that has 2 x track greyhound bitch's that are doing ok. One bitch you could hardly get near at first but has turned into a lovely bitch now and has made me think about getting one. recall and retrieving and start off daytime only for a while , that's what I'd do Quote Link to post
Dales Hunter 22
Hi - sorry for the lack of updates. The only real progress made thus far us with his recall and that he's getting used to the ferrets being around. Unfortunately, I've just broken my hand so won't be able to take him out hunting but will let you know how I get on! Quote Link to post
