Hi all

 

I'm new to all this and was wondering whats the largest animal you can shoot with an air rifle? I was told once you could shoot foxes but since seeing the bit on the rules on here I now see that was a bids fat lie.

 

Is a rabbit the largest animal?

 

Also on your property or someone's property eg a house with large garden what can you shoot? When does an animal become a pest?

When it's in you garden and in your crosshairs!

 

You CAN shoot a fox with an air rifle, just like you can shoot a rhino with an air rifle, but the question is whether it's legal, never mind sensible!

 

I'm sure someone will give you a link to the appropriate BASC page which lists which animals require which calibres to be used. As far as I know, air rifles are limited to use on vermin, which as you say is anything up to wabbit size. Animals become "vermin" or "pests" when they are so designated by DEFRA, I believe.

 

I believe it's the same as in France, in that you can shoot any vermin or pest species freely on your own property so long as the projectile doesn't leave your land. If you have the landowner's written permission, you can shoot vermin or pest species on their land with the same restriction.

The question is. Unless its a clean heart/lung shot, the fecker wont even flinch. Unless you have a HW100 on a pod. Defo clean head shot then. About 4 1/2 mildots holdover.

As you're 'new to all this', it's probably best and easiest to stick to the species and conditions listed on the General License.

 

If there was an animal large enough to endanger pets (I guess you mean a fox?), there are more specialised, experienced and better-equipped shooters who can deal with them safely and humanely.

I was on about a stray cat really. We don't get fox problems they can't get over the fence.

 

I'm not going to shoot a cat before anyone says anything, I was just asking experienced people on here incase there's a loop hole in the law or something saying if a mangy thing comes on your land your entitled to get rid or something.

Easy just aply for your fac then you wont need to worry about the size of your pray ,

 

as in most cases shooting cats or fox,s with a sub 12 air rifle will more than likely just coarse pain and discomfort to the animal

 

If you have not been a bad boy in the past and are of age just try for your fac what have you got to lose

As usual, you always get the right information when you come on here.

I would add that now you know what is on the general licence, make sure you can group your pellets inside a 10p piece at all of your hunting ranges before going on the hunt to kill God's critters.

If you take pot shots at someones pet, you'll find yourself in a world of 5hit very quickly !

Even if it's definitely a stray, a cat is defined as 'property' in law - you have no right to shoot it. My uinderstanding is that it is NOT legal to shoot a cat under any circumstances. Just don't do it !

It damn well needs it tho its rotten. Im goin on the idea of vandal paint on the fense now so if it has got a home near by it can go make a mess on their property.

My shootings decent mate its just the law i wanted to check up on. Im confident i could take a rabbit out cleanly with a head shot
